She is stunning and these are great portraits. Did you crop? I just bought a 50mm v2 (1964) and will start my journey with it and get used to its 1m distance.

I found an M9M with a new sensor today, looks barely used so I yielded to temptation.

I've likely previously posted this image, probably about six years ago, but I can't be bothered trawling away through to check. But I've been combing through the hard drives, trying to round up a collection of mono images I've taken around my home city over the years.

Don't know about anyone else, but I reach a point where I get tired of my own images. They seem familiar, stale even. I can't be objective about them. I'm finding it a chore, rounding up these images. I came across this one. It was taken in March 2018, when the UK was hit by a blast of cold weather from Siberia. The weather system was dubbed 'the beast from the east'. I'd never seen snow like it before (or since) so I got up very early and took my M9M out into it. I was glad I did. There were pictures galore to be had.

This isn't one of them. It's from that morning, but won't make the cut. It's just a man walking past a scene. I was out so early there was hardly anyone around, and I waited a long time for someone to come along. It just so happened to be a person of colour, dressed in black - and there he is, in a near blizzard, which makes for a striking contrast. But I don't think it's a strong or interesting enough picture.

However, looking at this picture as a full-size TIFF file on my monitor, I'm reminded of how great the original M Monochrom is. The look of the files, I think, is closer to 35mm black and white film than perhaps the later Monochrom cameras? The detail and tonality of pictures I see from the M11M look to have the tonal range and detail of 5x4, which is incredible really. And on the latest Monochroms, it seems you can go to crazy high ISO settings, without creating much, if any, 'grain'.

This shot was at the base ISO of 320. It reminds me of the look of 35mm Ilford FP4. With the M9M, you can take it up to 1600 ISO and get a beautiful grain-like look to the images, not unlike pushed Tri-X. It really is like shooting a digital camera with a choice of 35mm mono film stocks built in.

The M9M has plenty of shortcomings - characteristics you might call them. I find the inaccuracy of the viewfinder probably the most annoying. When you frame up a scene, there is always a little too much sky at the top in the final image. I have to remember to tilt the camera down a touch to compensate. The M11 certainly doesn't have this issue.

But anyway, it's nice once in a while, for us M9M owners to reflect on what a great and unique camera it is that we own, even after all these years.
