Great topic - would love to see your essay. I wish this can create awareness and opportunities for the people on this estate.

Thank you. It's coming together. The spot where this estate sits is prime real estate. It's only a short walk from the plush west end of the city. The location is great. But the four 26 storey towers are earmarked for demolition. Cheap low-rise housing will replace it. The people in the towers will be re-housed, but nobody knows where. I'm sure some people will make a lot of money from this. It's an oft-repeated story in cities like Glasgow.

This sounds very similar to the Cabrini Green housing projects in Chicago. Three guesses as to who won out there.

I'm "back in the saddle again," so to speak. After several years of moving from the MM1 to the M10M, I've reacquired the MM1. This morning was my first time out with it. I already like it more than the M10M.

Nice photo fotografr.

May I ask out of curiosity what makes you like the IQ from M9M more than M10M?

Thank you.

Certainly. The files from the M10M seem too creamy and smooth for my taste. I find myself having to do a lot of post processing to achieve the look that I was used to from the MM1. I cut my teeth on Tri-X and the files that come out of the MM1 closely mirror that look. Perhaps it's the lower dynamic range in part that creates files with more pop right out of the camera. Certainly, there's a special look associated with the Kodak CCD that appeals to me, both in the MM1 and the standard M9. A good example is the image below, which was pretty much right out of the MM1 with very little done in post.

Mechanically, the M10M is vastly superior to the MM1. The shutter is whisper quiet, the body is thinner, the controls are easier to navigate and the LCD is larger and much sharper. That's a lot to give up when taking the MM1 out rather than the M10M, but in my opinion it's worth it.

… and the VF is better (magnification, eye relief and larger opening), RF built to higher tolerances, 2m frame line optimization (vs 1m), and better weather sealing.

And still worth it IMO, too.

Part of the OOC results relate to the default tone curve, but the CCD (and lower MP) surely add something else.

Going through the archive yesterday, and found this image. I'd almost forgotten about it. From April 2013, and taken using my M9M, which was only eight months old at the time.

I took it in the abandoned Gray Dunn biscuit factory at Tradeston, Glasgow. Looking out here at the M8 motorway, which cuts right through the city centre. The factory has since been demolished, but it certainly was an interesting, and slightly nerve-wracking, place to wander around.

Dennis,

Choosing Summar IS Magic 👍 in this picture two things enchant me:

the nice and unique 'blur-in-progress' that I know well of Summar 5cm

and the hardly visible but works well to enhance the blur at bottom, the woman's silhouette top-right.

Dear Arnaud,

Thank you for your comment and encouraging words !  I use to embrace the 5cm Hektor (superb lens for its age) but the speed, function (aperture ring) and draw of the 5cm Summar is hard for me to ignore and repel.  Especially shooting monochrome.

I believe the copy I used was coated after world war.  There are minor scratches and haze but if it is used in the right condition, it shines!

Cheers,

Dennis

Dennis,

I use two nice condition 5cm Summar (very hard to find indeed),one is coated the other is not coated.

This old design unique lens may had been created as such when coating was not an option,

in my use, coated or not the two Summar behaviors are the same, that is good news for me.

Never tried them side by side (what for ? ), maybe in contre-jour situation, the coated may be better for flare.

You can see if it's coated looking at front lens, the color (coated) or plain white glass.

Dear Arnaud,

Getting a nice condition Summar is almost like hitting a lotto IMHO.  Congratulations!

My beat up Summar is definitely usable.  The made was from 1934 and I am 100% sure coating was applied after WWII.  I am pairing it with the M9M for a while, I am sure.

Cheers,

Dennis
