The R8 and R9 already have contacts within the camera, and Rom lenses have been available for years...along with R mount cam conversion to ROM available. It has always been said by leica that the ROM contacts (while currently providing some information to the camera) are there for future use....

I would guess the ROM mount has been around since around 1996 when the R8 came out on the market.

but i do know when Leica says future....that could mean years.....many years

I wonder if they could look some 15 - 20 years into the future, I doubt, especially with the attidue they used to have!

If they had been able to somehow look into the future they would have brought a full DSLR to marke around 2000 - not their hybrid solution in 2005 (at least 3-4 years late)!

My statement: if they change the mount I will use my R-lenses for analog photos into the future and buy myself a didtal Nikon with some lenses for this path.

That would be def. the end of the relationship between myself and Leica.

Same here, but I am not sure if the next camera would be a Nikon

Same here but it would be totally stupid to do this IMHO as Leica needs s/h lenses to survive.

Buying both a $6/7K body plus a couple of new lenses in the first place would be too expensive for people used to pay 'only' $4K or less for a brand new R9.

Stop-down metering with 'old' lenses? Thanks no thanks Mr Leica. non.gif

There is no reason to have to change the R-mount to implement AF.

Nikon did it with the F mount and so did Pentax.

There are two reasons to change your mount.

A) It's is not wide enough and hampers the design of lenses (The R mount is plenty big).

B) You want to force your customers to buy new lenses.

I had a DMR and I enjoyed it. Issue is that whatever will happen it will make the DMR outdated and the price will go down (has gone own already). While you of course can continue to enjoy your DMR, it will never allow you FF and AF - period. If this is ok for you, then just forget about anything in this thread.

I can never understand this rush to always have the latest camera! If a camera and lens system is able to take the images you need or like and you enjoy using it......why change until you have to? ie a catastrophic failure or accident.

If the R10 turns out to be what most people think, AF with the same R lens mount capable of using existing MF lenses with focus confirmation, then in time I would have thought that many existing users would buy the R10. Meanwhile Leica may attract a whole new customer base of photographers who have only ever used AF lenses and are therefore put off the Leica reflex system because of it's MF only lenses.

I dread to think what the weight of AF 'R' lenses would be for travelling though!

Don't forget the main one that some of us fear but others dream about: get a larger format than 24x36.

The 4:5 28x35 format I've been talking about is about 13.43% larger than the 2:3 24x36 format but will fit into the existing R mount just fine (as far as I can "see").

I don't see any need to tweak a lot of things except maybe making the prism taller, also the shutter needs a slightly longer trip vertically ... adding a 100% coverage viewfinder with 0.9+ magnifying factor.

And I think it needs to be another Porsche Design ... just to beat the Nikon thing from Italy. :)

Another interesting topic.

I have made statements to the fact on this forum concerning the R10 lens mount.

At the time I said I could not see any reason why Leica should replace their R mount.

Well over the last few days I have had a change of mind, SO WHY.

Like most of you on this forum I have a large collection of R gear, and when I got the stuff

It was for my Slide film and not paticularly for Digital use, as after all I am not that interested in this Electronic medium

So why bother or care what Leica does with the R10, I have no reason to buy one at this time.

But with so many concerns on this forum, what are Leica's intentions with the R10.

................FOR ONE THING, IT WILL BE EXPENSIVE.................

Some time back I was told, it will have some very advance features such as it's auto focus system.( perhaps some form of laser activation) thus reason for new mount.

Remember Leica R lenses are quite heavy and need some torque to operate them, (larger motor.)

Possibilty AF will be IR or laser guided, heeps of data can be transferred by this method compared to fixed electrical contact points, no more problems with dirty or damaged ECP's.

So Incorporating more new technology via a new mount to the sensor could be the way to go.

So If an adapter is warranted, no problems, as long it allows full operation of MF lenses.

I also feel Leica will only make a few AF lenses for it's R10 as the majority will still be their MF Lenses for the next few years.

I am still very very happy with my R manual focus lenses and have no intention in changing

As long I am able to buy my beloved slide film, I will use my Leica RRRRrrrrrrrrrr'sssss till my lights go out.

Ken.

Again, sorry Ken, but why would Leica be unable to do like Nikon who did not change their mount for the D3? The R mount is larger than Nikon's and the AF motors would be in the lenses no?

Let's not forget that Leica could not make the Sinar deal. Sinar makes cameras with larger sensors than 24x36mm2 like selling the Hy6. Let's see if Leica executives are still dreaming of larger formats - competing against Hasselblad and others, not caring about the R system or pricing - or just continue the R series. A camera calle R10 should be compatible with R lenses whatever the mount changes may be. Let's not forget that neither Nikon nor Pentax kept the original mount. The old lenses still fit mechanically, but to benefit of most or all interesting features, you need to buy new lenses. Why not present a R10 camera AND a larger format camera with a slightly different mount that support R via adpater as well as backwards.

Can't tell for Pentax but i don't see any change between pre- and post-D3 Nikon mount so far. Fits FF and DX lenses as well as older ones without any adapter. Am i missing something here?

LCT, I am positively sure that Leica can use their present R mount on the R10, but they could very well be looking at more advance features for future applications.

Of course this is all speculation on my part.

So what ever Leica does, I am sure you will be able to use your newly acquired R lenses on the R10 with or without an adapter.

For me, I am not that concerned on the R10 mount, after all I am still shooting Slide Film where my R lenses are simply at their best.

Cheers.

also the shutter needs a slightly longer trip vertically

I.e. it wouldn't be possible to use a standard shutter from Copal or whoever, but the camera would have to bear the cost of developing a new model with some difficult compromises among

  • cost
  • reliability
  • noise and vibration
  • sync speed

?

Thank you Ken i felt pretty sure as well but with all those rumors i begin to wonder if good sense still prevails at Leica. Anyway the good part of it is i'm shooting film again and funnily enough i don't hate that.
