robsonj Posted December 19, 2022 Share #1 Posted December 19, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I didn't find anything in the menus, but I could have missed it. On the M11, is there an option to open the shutter for lens cleaning? I realize I could just turn on the camera without a lens attached, but I always assume that to not be advisable versus cleaning the sensor (dust blower) while the camera is off. I recall on the M10, you could have the camera retract the shutter for cleaning, I can't remember if the camera was actually still on though in that scenario or not. robsonj Posted December 19, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted December 19, 2022 Just now, Musky said: If the camera is turned off the shutter closes. Yep, I assume in the sensor cleaning mode they cut power to the sensor though, anyway, it was that menu option that I was missing.

I only do it if I see it in my pictures in normal use. Otherwise I don’t even check. It’ll be a never ending swab fest if I inspect all the time and want it perfectly clean all the time. It’ll drive you crazy. I use a high magnifying lamp with an LED and clean with a small APS-C swab. Just go over the dust particles that I see and I’m done. Without that magnifier you just can’t see anything. Yep, I usually just give it a blow with the rocket blower, that’s all

Before swabbing, try blowing it first off with a blower. I like Nitecore's BlowerBaby. If that does not remove the dust, use an appropriate brush. I like Visible Dust Arctic Butterfly, The swab method is the most invasive and should be left as a last resort.

Unless is a huge chunk of dust that just casually floated on the sensor. Well it can actually make it worse. Those static brushes can’t be found where I am. The swab is fine. Takes a few seconds. the dust I’m talking about you can’t see unless you’re using a 10x or 20x magnifier and an LED light. I always use a sensor loupe when checking for dust. In most cases, blowing worked for me. Have you trie the battery powered Nitecore's Blower Baby? With swab there is always a danger of residue and requires more care. That is why I use it only as the last resort. Which swabs do you use?
