Touched a nerve, eh?

What, referring back to one-off defects years ago? Or someone's fairly certain they've seen a picture of a fault somewhere? We could all play that game, and fill the forum with posts; and that's before you try the same exercise with other brands.

I guess the thread is diverging from its original issue because there hasn't been much more to report. Take my comments as a sign that I am genuinely interested why and how many cameras are scratching film. Nor do I have any wish (as your comment might imply) to defend Leica's QC (which has clearly failed with respect to scratches) or its service department (which failed you, and from my experience, is miserably slow and uncommunicative).

There seem to be an awful lot of one-off defects.  The new 35 1.4 FLEII shipped w broken aperture blades.  The new Summiliux 35 that Leica forgot to test with the lens hood on so they missed the hard vignetting.  M6/MP etc cameras scratching film.  I could go on, but I think this is enough of these one-off defects.

Did I say something to upset you?

If you don't want a crutch, dump that M-A with it's rangefinder mechanism - a crutch for those not able to estimate focus - and get an MdA.

Or do you not have the required skill to do that?

We've had this conversation before.

I have been shooting lately with my Leica Model 1, Model A…. No rangefinder, no Crutch light meter like your scratched object…

You might want to try it… learn something or two about shooting without a battery to lighten up red dots so you can turn the aperture in the correct direction.  Wow, real tough, isn’t it. So proud of you hus, you have the skill to match up dots. Have you tried painting by numbers yet?

I spoke with a reputable dealer and they said they open two boxes of MP’s and both of them had scratched film. These were recent production too..

I have a new recent production M-A (2022/09) that I ran an expired roll through it. I did not notice scratches on it, but I have two rolls out being processed at two different places. When I get those back I will be sure as to weather my M-A is good or not.

But also notice the second to last photograph, it seems Leica have moved the four screws on the pressure plate to be inline with the film perfs. It was never like that in 2010.

The screws now seem to be out of the image area but would scratch the perf line if you have a problem?

One pair of screws were always inline with the perforations and one pair JUST within the frame area. As far as I can see nothing has changed.

  • andybarton changed the title to Brand new MP/M-A/M6 film scratches [Merged]

I reported earlier that my new MP BP (Jan 23) did not scratch a sacrificial film I ran through with the back both open and closed.
I have just received back from the processors the first roll of film I have used in anger (Portra 800). I digitised it myself with the SL2-S (i.e. no ICE scratch removal). No sign of scratches on the negatives or in the images; exposures look good, as does focusing, though most images were not particularly sensitive to focusing.

I’m fairly certain I’ve seen a picture of the MA with the leatherette stripped back showing a piece of metal covering the unused battery chamber, ie the MP and MA share the same body. Can’t remember if it was here or elsewhere, but some were complaining about the indent caused by the patch being visible as unevenness in the leatherette.

I'm going to start a rumour that this piece of metal is made of zinc. 😈

An excellent rumour; zinc is often used as a sacrificial anode where saltwater electrolysis can take place, eg at sea. Just need to add the necessary weather sealing to those ‘scratchers’, which of course can be added at the first service (usually within a week or two of original purchase).

Good news. 👍

There may be a market here for some highly dubious accessory to 'protect' a zinc M6 - how about a black gaffer tape sticker with a small sliver of magnesium ribbon in the centre of the sticky side, which you apply to your top plate to act as an anode? It might well do more harm than good, but by then I'll already have sold 100 on ebay at $50 each, closed the account, and moved on to my next scam.

The only downside is having to keep camera immersed in seawater 😄
