Where did I say that it was ok for a camera to scratch film, or that an enlarger or a scanner scratched the film in this case? Are you guys even reading these posts?

How much of the “scratch-gate” is the result of scanning film using harsh digital methods that turn up micro-scratches and other problems that in the past were normally hidden by diffusion enlargers?

The answer is zero.

Verified by Leica admitting these cameras have defective pressure plates.

I think that @M9reno was suggesting that the scanning process might have revealed the scratches on the film, not that it caused them.

The problem with that theory is he didn't think it through.  If the scanning process used would show scratches, then how come the only scratches shown are from those taken with the defective M6?

Every other camera I have - from 110 to 6x10 formats, from $20 to $10,000 cameras - all 82 of them, have the film scanned in the exact same way.

But only one camera - the 2022 Leica M6 - shows scratches.   The same camera that Leica has admitted has defective pressure plates.

“micro scratches” caused by the new M6.  No need for super hi rez scanning to see them…

I wish an admin would lock this thread now that the problem was resolved. Not looking forward to the continual stream of people finding this thread for the first time, requiring the story to have to be retold and defended over and over.

Fully agree. Enough is enough.

But then someone new might find a camera that scratched their film and start a new thread and start the whole thing over again. And then the mods will have to merge threads, again. Unless the thread is locked and pinned it might be better to leave well enough alone and let it drift up and down the thread pile, a bit like the Flying Dutchman. I'm not sure it deserves locking and pinning so I say let sleeping dogs lie.

People don't need to open and read every thread.

Very true, but they tend to. I just think most members are totally fed up with this thread and it not as though it is something new, there have been reports of scratching since before 2014.

I agree, reports of Leicas scratching film have been around for a couple of decades at least, as far as I can tell. Locking a thread, though, sounds like restricting comment, will generate negative commentary, and will prevent anyone else who currently still has a camera that scratches film from telling us how their problems were resolved. At the moment it sounds like close the commentary because Huss' camera was fixed, and his camera was by no means the first or the last in the most recent spate of cameras to be affected. Hopefully as these cameras are fixed the thread will attract less attention and wither away from lack of interest.

Heck, I like this thread!  It involves the most important function of a film camera - successfully move film past a lens without damaging the film.

I agree that as the scratching problem is corrected by Leica, the interest in the thread will naturally decline.  But I see no reason to lock the thread.  As has often been said on every forum I have ever been on, "If you are not interested in the subject, don't read it."

Good points from some above about leaving it open.

@Huss, maybe when someone new pops into this thread with skepticism, we can point them back to an old post and tell them to read the thread vs having to explain and defend the issue all over again. It’s your call of course, but maybe it would save you some major stress 😁

I think perhaps there should be saved in an FAQ/sticky a mention to the effect of 'film scratching has occurred off and on in some Leica MP/MA/new M6 (2022). Leica has confirmed it is due to faulty pressure plates.  If yours is effected, contact Leica customer service for resolution.

That's it - three short sentences based on fact.  No discussion.  Not open for comments.

This will remove the early accusations of it being user error, and the denials of some that such a problem could possibly exist.  And basically shows the involved user where to go.

I suspect that this forum and others helped Leica resolve this issue.  Proving it wasn't a couple hysterical customers. I'm sure that Leica doesn't fabricate all (most?) parts. Once a supplier goes through a rigorous qualification process, most incoming parts are not subject to inspection. A supplier had glitch.

Yeah but, no but, Leica packs those QC cards claiming they've inspected blah blah blah...

I’ll have to double check but I believe my Jan build M6 is scratching film in a similar way, is it best to contact Wetzlar directly?

Maybe contact your dealer for a replacement first. m6 is new and they might have unsold stock or they can order a replacement from Leica. Wetzlar doesn’t do whole camera replacement and their repair time can take up to 6 months.

I am in favour of this thread staying as an active thread so that any future owners who experience the problem can report it.  It is a great way to keep Leica on their toes regarding quality control and customer service. If they improve their QC procedures and address outstanding warranty claims quickly this thread will fade away into the sunset by itself.

What should one do if one believes they are in possession of a scratcher? Go to the leica dealer or direct to Germany?

Talk to your dealer first - or if you have a Leica Store nearby, them.  Where are you?

The advantage of going through the dealer or Leica Store is they take care of the shipping.  At least that is how it worked for me in the USA.
