Just a quick test nothing scientific, but i think i have come to the conclution that the summilux pre-asph is of course as we all know soft with very nice characteristics @ 1.4 but what surprises me is that the summilux at f2 seems both sharper and more contrasty than my summicron type 4 from f2 and up, this means you get a great soft portrait f/1.4 lens, and a sharp landscape lens in one and the same lens, which is in my book great...:-)

Heres, my boring test subject:

Maybe this one is better, still the same lens, but this time in color:

Just tried this lens today, and just love the characteristics of this lens.... :-)

really like the grainy b&w effect. did you add the grain or did you shoot at a high iso. could you share you PP technique to achieve this grain and your B&W conversion method

Jack: thanks for that one. I just saw a mint 35 pre-asph 'lux for sale and nearly pressed the button, but your post reminded me that my ver IV 'cron will be just fine.

My pleasure --- they are both really nice lenses with different characteristics from f 4 down. An old-vine Zin versus a Merlot :)

I was trying to get a Cron version IV but all this talk of it raised the price through the roof on e-bay, you guys are killing my buying habits . Stop it until I get the lens. ROTFLMAO.

honestly I think they were maybe 1100 and looks like one will hit 1500 by the end of the day and the guy resides 10 miles from me. It's killing me but not going that high on it

Guy... a good idea... when you (and other of US) want to sell something on ebay... make 4 or 5 PM to some of us... we'll quickly setup a splendid and trustable thread so that you'll see the bids for your item skyrocketing :) . Then we'll find a $ arrangement within our group... why hell those f... Wall Street boys must be the only people to play such games ? :D

ROTFLMAO that was very good luigi. I'll find on eventually. I have the new 35 cron asph and it is a beaty but a little contrasty in this sun here. i would like a softer lens too

Summilux 35/1.4 pre-asph # 3,501,***

Sharpness & bokeh at f/1.4 & f/2.0.

No problem apparently.

(forget the colors guys i'm using an old iMac G3 here)

I never tried a 35 CronIV, but my lux pre asph is surely sharper than my Cron 35 III at 5,6 to 11. I insist: it's a FINE lens.

FTR, both lenss get *really* sharp at f5.6, as sharp as any modern ASPH version and contrast is pretty close too. They are actually pretty much indistinguishable on center through corner RESOLUTION from f2 through f4 as they both sharpen up to optimum. The real difference is CONTRAST, where the Pre-Lux's is definitely lower at f1.4 (compared to the ver IV at f2), a bit closer at f2, then on to about f3.5 where they equalize. On BOKEH, the Pre-Lux is more variable in the far background as I displayed above, where the ver IV is more consistently smooth.

Cheers,

Not my experience so far but i've just bought the 35/1.4 so i might change my mind.

Do you remember the first digits of your 35/1.4's serial number Jack?

Trying to reproduce your ugly bokeh but i can't seem to find out the right flowers so far.

It's too cold here perhaps...

I need to have enough contrast to make it happen with mine...

More to point out the subtleties of these two lenses... Here are some similar shots all from the 35 ver IV shown side-by-side at f2 and f5.6 so you can see the bokeh is consistently smooth throughout the aperture range with this lens.

Central area, where I focused with close background:

35iv_focuscomp.jpg

Deeper backgound:

Lower left corner/foreground:

So IMO the "glow" is there with the version IV, as is some of the swirly Bokeh, but the swirl is not quite as promminent as the Pre-Lux's. (I happen to like the swirl effect so wish the IV had a bit more, but at least my 50 Pre-Lux has even more than my 35 pre-Lux did.)

My reason for owning a classic 35 was for the "look," and as such I am shooting it wide open most of the time. In this, I felt the 35 IV gives me a slightly better overall Bokeh than the 35 Pre-Lux did, and I personally love the creamy smooth all over the IV delivers so consistently, that I chose it. However, the 35 Pre-Lux offers more variety of character across the apertures, so I realize my choice is made on different criteria than other's choices will be. These lenses both offer subtleties not found in other lenses, and the bottom line is they are both pretty great. If money were no object I'd own both, but in my case I feel lucky even owning one of them...

Cheers,

Depends on the meaning of 'glow' of course but i guess the twirling effect you refer to is that of the 35/2 IV at f/2 right? If so yes the 35/1.4 OOF looks different at f/2.I thought that this was due to a higher sharpness and/or contrast of the Lux like that of the 50/1.4 compared to the 50/2 perhaps but i may be wrong. Next time i have some time i'll try compare both lenses side by side.
