topoxforddoc Posted October 23, 2007 Share #15 Posted October 23, 2007 What a great driver. Like many British and other drivers of that era, he sadly perished. Nowadays, it's so unusual to see driver fatalities. Up until the late 1980s, when run-offs came in and catch fencing went out, we use to see fatalities every year. Maybe that's why they liked to party a lot. Now it just seems a bit too serious. Charlie
Guest flatfour Posted October 24, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 24, 2007 It depends on your view but motor racing has changed from being a sport to being a business. Jackie Stewart saw to that. It was he who brought in so many of the safety rules and the commercialisation. I don't blame him but I do attribute to him the move from sport to business. He hasn't won many friends as a result. elansprint72 Posted October 24, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted October 24, 2007 Seems to me that the young drivers of today think that they are invincible due to all the safety protection in the cars. "Dirty driving" used to be pretty rare, now it seems to be acceptable to drive people off the road. However, some of the cheque book racing evident at Goodwood this year threatens to spoil even the classic and vintage races. 30 years ago the only damage at a VSCC race meeting was when someone's wheel fell off, now there seems to be a major shunt at each event. Thee attached shot took place at Donington recently, it was in the background of the zone I was shooting, hence the low quality. The car hit the concrete very hard, throwing the driver out and his helmet came off. Welcome, dear visitor! Guest flatfour Posted October 25, 2007 Share #18 Posted October 25, 2007 Nice shot Pete and don't worry about the sharpness. Was that a K3 Magnette - not the ex Dick Seaman car ? A propos the helmet the scrutineer should have checked the fixings and the driver could be penalised. A helmet just can't come off if it's properly fixed.
