Beautiful!

So Cameraleather started making them at last?

Not sure where the OP had it done. However, as posted elsewhere, they are doing the M8 provided you send it in. They don’t show it on their web site because it’s not offered as a customer kit. This is based on my own inquiry and subsequent response from those guys.

Regards,:o

Morgan Sparks (Cameraleather) did it for me. He did my chrome M3 in July the same way. the pictures do not do it justice.

I actually picked up the M3 in Burlington and met Morgan. They do a fine job.

Yeah, it's nice and I'm considering it after I receive my M8. Is it just me or does it seem like the calendar stands still when you're waiting for a new camera?

Yes, any finish would be nicer than the current one (though I would probably stick to black!) but I'm wondering what happens if the the M8 then goes into service. Will Leica just trash your re-coat and then refinish it with the original, or will they be able to re-use the new leather. Questions worth considering imo at least for the first two years of the camera's life.

Oh, and can he re-coat the grip as well?

I've been talking to Morgan for a little while and have just ordered a set - including the grip - to beta-test the process and document it so that others here can do it themselves with confidence. Morgan is sending me a few quality rejects to try first to perfect the process.

He's suggested, for example, cutting the leather into two underneath the lens mount to make the leather easier to apply. I'll be trying it both ways.

Morgan is still finalising cost, but it comes out about the same as one mid-sized IR filter.

As for colour, strictly personal taste - I'm playing safe with black kid skin. I think chrome cameras carry a range of colours better than black cameras.

Actually, that’s a valid point although if the cost of the skin job isn’t too high, it may be worth the gamble in that only a few bodies return for repair. I’m too new to know the return ratio vs. risk factor.

Regards,

Ha! You might want to give it a while - 3-6 months - just to play it safe. Mine needed replacement after a few weeks (a # of issues became apparant though not all at once) and my replacement body is now back to Solms or hoefullu just NJ for sticky framelines (a common problem among all Ms) and rangefinder calib.

Nice present! Nice look!

Though I'm not going to customize my M8s... For me, they are just cameras and I don't see the point of engraving my name or customizing them. I would never do either "car tuning" to my car... This is not a critizism. I agree your camera looks very nice. It's just a question of personal taste ;)

Never mind, my question is what happens if you need to send your camera to Solms (or NJ) for a fix and they need to dismantle your camera? Leica will be able to fix the green leather after fixing your camera or they will need to replace it with the original vulcanite?
