I asked the regional sales rep after she returned from the sales meeting in Solms in September whether the current line-up of R lenses will become obsolete and if I needed to sell all my R lenses before the news hit the street. She laughed at my question and reassured me not to worry. With their current problem of not being able to keep up with demand for M lenses, it might be suicidal to introduce the R-10 which would require a new line of dedicated lenses.

I have the following lenses:

19mm

28mm

50mm f2

100mm macro

70-180mm f2.8

280 modular

400 modular

1.4 ext

2.0 ext

If Leica doesn't have a digital R future I will sell everything.

They have this digital future - BUT:

1) the new DSLR will only take old R glass via an adapter because of new bajonet - and this is not even sure.

2) the new DSLR will have a larger sensor than 24x36. so I assume they are building a whole new system to fit into a new high end niche - maybe competition to H3, maybe below

3) given that new sensor size the R lenses will be only usable in Crop mode

4) the old glass will never be AF - for AF and using FF you need the new lenses

I decided to sell most of my R glass, except some pieces I really love and want to keep for sentimental reasons.

Which 3 basic R lenses would you suggest to buy for a possible full frame R10 user?

Summicrons 35, 50 & 90? With how many cams?

Sorry R newbie here.

Depends on what you do ... my 3 basics are 80/1.4, 90AA and 180 APO cron. If you're into wide angles ... go for the 19/2.8, 28/2.8 and may be a 50 cron ... forget to mention, ROM versions.

Thank you guys, i should have elaborated more sorry.

Would be for day to day use, so standard, short wide and short tele primes.

Assuming that the R10 is full frame (24x36 or so) and letting aside the price and the physical size of the lenses, would you go for:

- 35/2 or 35/1.4 (if there is one for the R)?

- 50/2 or 50/1.4?

- 90/2 or 90/2.8?

I certainly hope Peter is wrong on all counts.

I have:

19 Elmarit

28 Elmarit

35 Cron and Lux

50 Cron and Lux

80 Lux (one of my all-time favourite lenses)

100 APO macro

180 Elmarit

All the newest versions, except for the 50 cron which is an old mandler-era Canadian lens that I just love.

The only one there I would sell is the 35 Cron :)

I want something longer, like the 280 f4...

The last 3 CAM 90/2.8 made in Canada is a super fabulous lens ... it can be had for less than 500 dollars. I wouldn't bother with the pre ASPH 90 cron ... if you need f/2, you can go for the 90AA.

There're some still floating around but all at much higher price when compared to the market before DMR ... if I must have it then I'd buy one brandnew with no second thought.

A 3 cam 50mm Summicron with retractable hood is a steal at the moment - I paid about £120 for mine, 180 Euros.

The 28mm f2.8 is also very good - I have a pre-ROM version that I've used a lot - I paid about £200, 300 Euros.

Both used on a Canon 5D.

Actually, the pre-aspherical 90 f/2 Summicron-R is a superb lens and can be acquired at a reasonnable price. If you have a chance go for it. If anything, using the Apo-Summicron is totally unforgiving for portraits of women... need I say more... ;)

I have ALL 90mms Leica has ever built, Conrad ... I agree with you on the 90AA, that may be a good reason to go for the pre asph version. :)
