Leica predicted they’d sell 7,500 Q cameras

I think they are over 75,000 now and counting…

why not expand the range a little since it’s a proven product and Leica is no longer going the CL/TL route.

Here’s to a small amount of expanding variety among the next 75,000  I’m not knocking the regular Q with 28 at all.  But I’d like to capitalize on what it brings so it can do more for me.  The leaf shutter and size is main selling point for me.  I’m sure there are many others in the same camp.

With the Q2 you get those frame lines with their digital crop modes, but you can never get the true perspective /depth of field of a dedicated lens just by changing the subject distance. Also it's been argued that the Q gives a wider fov than a true 28mm.

The Q2/Q are still amazing for 28mm users, however I'd be exciting to see a Q3 based on the new 35  lux or new 50mm lux design. 28mm is not everyones favourite focal length; that's something has been discussed ad nauseam in this forum. YMMV

Count me amongst the bemoan, not that I resent anyone who enjoys a wide lens but so often I see clutter in the resulting images that a 50mm or longer lens would have done better.   I like to look at a subject and distill down to the essence of what makes it interesting to photograph, so often 28mm doesn’t work.  For me 35mm is a super-wide.

Been saying this for ages. The Q2 has a fixed 28mm deal with it. If you don’t like it because of the 28mm, wtf* did you buy it?

To all the bemoaners, here’s an idea.

How about a Q with 3 interchangeable lenses … 28mm, 50mm, or 85mm only … then you can pick and choose.

🤔🤔🤔 oh wait that’ll be one of the other camera bodies Leica makes.

It's baffling to me why anyone who is happy with a 28mm is against someone else also being happy with an additional longer lens. No one is suggesting that they get rid of the 28mm. Fixed lens cameras have very often in the past come with a wide version and a standard version. Often equivalent to a 24-28 and a 35-50mm. How does this in any way hurt you if you want to stick with a 28mm?

The ideal would be a Q with the equivalent to the old MATE trielmar lens for Leica M with it's 28-35-50 range but of course it was only f4 and I should imagine a f2 or even f2.8 would just make the camera to big. While cropping the 28mm lens is a good option it just can't replace the use of an actual lens of the correct focal length for the job

Maybe I’m sick to death about people who constantly moan about things they buy and demand a company change it to THEIR requirements. Maybe they should do their due diligence and research the product BEFORE buying it.

Leica saw an opportunity for a 28mm fixed lens camera, created it offered it for sale and people bought it. Did they not check it out before purchase, or did they just jump on it because it’s a new Leica and bought it because influencers said it was the mutt’s nuts?

You bought the thing if you don’t like it sell it and get something else that suits your personal requirements.

So it is just being misanthropic then? Ok, that is helpful.

I am very happy with my Q2 as it is and see no personal reason to change: especially if the Q3 changes the base focal length. If the market demands a change to the same, I am out.

To me the best option that may satisfy all is 60mp with the digital zoom being reflected in the EVF. Not that I want 60mp but it may assist those that wish to crop to 35mm and beyond and are pixel hungry.

I do see @OThomas's point. If the new camera does not suit, look elsewhere.

Great video. Watched it full length which is rare for me. The images and the stories behind them are lovely. Thanks for sharing!

JMHO but clutter in the 28mm images you so often see is a result either of inexperience or laziness on the photographer's part.  If there is unwanted clutter in the background move closer to your subject matter.  If there are physical restraints that keep you from moving closer, crop out the clutter in post processing.  Sometimes neither works - and we just have to accept the fact that some images are going to have some clutter in them in spite of our best efforts.

That would seem to indicate that Leica got it right in settling on the 28mm f/1.7 Summilux with macro capability for the Q cameras.  When a company predicts 7500 units will sell and that prediction is exceeded by a factor of ten, there's a message in those numbers.

I'm not against having a 50mm Summilux Q in addition to the traditional 28mm Summilux Q; I have to wonder why Leica has not made that camera so far.  Technological issues?  Manufacturing space at Wetzlar?  Too high of a retail price compared to the 28mm Q?  Or are the predicted sales numbers too low to make it viable?  Or would making a 28mm and 50mm Q3 and a 28mm and 50mm Q3 Monochrom be a bridge too far for Leica?  That's four different Q3 cameras - perhaps that's just not doable.

...I am positive Leica has two focal length versions of Q3's ready for all users to be happy...

Maybe so - it will be interesting to see what happens.  Perhaps a 50mm Q3 will be offered to help fill the gap left by the retiring of the CL line...
