Curious if you need to send it back to Germany for a CLA or even an upgrade.

That’s where the M7 needs to go (in Europe), I am also told.

Me neither, but that’s the dilemma; is the upgrade worth it. I shoot quit a lot, so wouldn’t want any annoyances.

I’m trying to come up with additional excuses to send it in, but this is getting desperate: I kinda always wanted an MP/Japan style script on top of the body and the aperture ring on my 50 cron is a bit loose, so those could be done with the same hassle.

Brain and wallet say no, heart says yes.

Contact DAG.  He may be able to help.  In the past he used to do the upgrades.

I had 2 BP MPs about 10 years ago and used them for a few years but then switched to digital and consigned them to Popflash who quickly sold them at a great price. I always preferred the silver M’s being more classically vintage appearing in my eyes.  Just ordered a silver MP as the exchange rate is so favorable for the USD but not for myself.  It’s a graduation gift for 4 years from now for my daughter who is a photography major.  Is there a big issue if I don’t open this up for several years and give it to her in 2026?  As an accompanying lens, I’m thinking of getting the new close focusing 35 Summilux in silver as the combination is beautiful.  Unfortunately this lens is still hard to get anywhere but would want 2, one for me too.😜

Get a 35 Summicron and give it to her now so she can use it while completing her degree. Order a steel rim and enjoy it when it arrives.

You are right. I’d get the current 35 Summicron ASPH in silver but would want her to learn on my Nikon FE2 and AIS lenses for film first.  Interestingly, even though she is a photography major, they don’t have any photo classes until next year. This is at Parsons.

No though some would argue that you should occasionally exercise the shutter (at various speeds) to keep things mechanically sweet. The main issue is that, if you don't open the box, you will miss the opportunity to check that all is well with the camera whilst the camera is still in warranty.

At a minimum I would run a roll through the camera and lens combination to test whether both are operating as they should.

Is your daughter interested in film photography? Sometimes these gifts are not received as intended … I have thought of the same for my daughters but I have no idea if they will have any interest in a film Leica …

Yes, I would prefer to check the camera and lens first but don’t want to break the seals myself.  I would rather she do it.  My track record with new lenses from Leica performing as they should is definitely not 100% but it was definitely worse 10-12 years ago. Recent acquisitions have had no issues except for the new reissue steel rim which has focus shift but that may be normal as per another thread I started. I am using the new visoflex with the M11 for focusing almost exclusively so won’t bother to send it in for adjustment as it may be “normal” behavior.

My daughter has interest in both film and digital although she uses a point and shoot for her present film camera.  She is very contemplative so hopefully this will translate into a bias towards film photography as part of her photography choices.

I picked up a BP MP to complement my MA about a month ago. I absolutely adore it. And after not thinking I missed an inbuilt meter… I am enjoying the simplicity of having one again!

My entire point… MA more pure

This is why I prefer my MdA over my MA.  The MdA is more pure because not only does it not have a meter, but it does not have a vf or rf to distract from the purity of the shooting experience.

Using an MdA is a jedi-like experience, where you become one with the photographic force.  I feel the force when I use my MdA, without the need of aids that the MA has.

Below is my pure MdA next to my much less pure MA

I will pass on the MdA…. That is simply impractical

Some people are not cut out for the pure Leica M experience, and instead choose the MA or MP.

Agreed there with the MP…:) really my dad was a biologist and they used that Leica model to capture images thru a microscope. I remember as a kid helping him. Late 60’s and early 70’s.

Sounds like she will love it. Congratulations and all the best!

Thank you.  I asked her about film vs digital.  Even at this early stage without any formal training, she does state a preferred aesthetic in color film compared to digital (even with the current emulsions) and looks forward to processing B&W films next year.  She also said the limited amount of exposures available in film compared to digital is a good thing.  Go figure.
