I'd definitely consider keeping an eye out for a used top plate. I did the same with the bottom plate on my M9 when New Jersey had a mint one for $100. It is in the cabinet and I don't worry about the one on it. If you're not planning to resale, maybe do nothing. At the rate that the M9 has appreciated,  I would think you would easily recover the cost of top plate replacement if and when you make a move, particularly if you have the skill to perform the work.

Thanks @codocee, they are all keepers so resale isn't in my equation I'll only replace them if/when they die so I'm going to live with the ding. I did look at the ones in Red Dot as Adam  @Adam Bonn had told me about but they are both a bit more "used" than mine. Also whilst I can do some stuff (adjusting focus/vertical alignment) I'd not be keen to undertake swapping the top plate so the cost just becomes not worth it.
