Shootist Posted September 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well about 3 days ago I got this lens after hemming and hawing over it for months. Reading this forum is very costly as everyone that has this lens raves about it, I now know why. Today was the first day I had to real spend with it. I am simply amazed. I doubt I'll ever use my 50mm Cron again and I think I might sell it, NO need to keep it. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 Hi Shootist, Take a look here 50mm Lux Wonderful on M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gregkoz Posted September 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2007 Ed, That shot is probably at f8.0 or higher - I sincerely doubt you can see a difference between Lux and Cron - I've had numerous copies of both in M mount. Wide open there is a difference - it's 1 stop.
M6J Posted September 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 30, 2007 Why rush to sell your Summicron? IMHO you should better keep it and use both until you are really sure that you don't need it.
michael_b_elmer Posted September 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 30, 2007 Congratulations! It is a good idea IMHO to sell the Summicron. You will not need it and probably never use it again.
Peter Branch Posted September 30, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 30, 2007 Congratulations! It is a good idea IMHO to sell the Summicron. You will not need it and probably never use it again. Could not agree more - the 50 mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH is a fantastic lens. 50 mm on an M8 is a very good focal length for casual portraits and the ability to use f/1.4 does help separate the subject from the background. guy Posted September 30, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 30, 2007 I'm thrilled with mine: agree that it's a superb choice for portraits. I've ordered a viewfinder magnifier (on eBay – mentioned in another thread) which I hope will make critical focusing a little bit easier when it's wide-open. bradhusick Posted September 30, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I find that when I need to be sure the photo is razor sharp from corner to corner, I reach for my 50 Lux ASPH LHSA chrome lens. It is surely heavy, but the results are always spectacular and the retro look on my chrome M8 is cool. -Brad

bradhusick Posted October 1, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 1, 2007 The 50mm Summilux LHSA is one of the most beautiful Leica lenses! Here's a pic for all. It has the modern aspheric optics in the classic shape. Yum. Welcome, dear visitor! pelikan1931 Posted October 1, 2007 Share #10 Posted October 1, 2007 it is also the new Leica CEO's favourite lens on his M8
Eoin Posted October 1, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 1, 2007 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read in the interview with LFI Mr Lee's prized possession was his f:/1.2 Noctilux. Either way f:/1.2 or f:/1.4 , the man obviously has taste
pelikan1931 Posted October 1, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 1, 2007 yes, he has taste, now when is he going to do a 50/1.2 Noctilux? or a black paint M8?
dpattinson Posted October 1, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 1, 2007 I put a rather nice monochrome from the 50lux in the photo forum here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/people/35131-50-lux-asph-m8.html It really is a very nice lens, apart from being a real cow to focus on the move. I don't find it any harder to focus then any other Leica lens and easier then the 75, 90 and 135. I do find that having the 1.25X mag on the camera does help which I rarely use with any other lens. guy Posted October 1, 2007 Share #16 Posted October 1, 2007 I don't find it any harder to focus then any other Leica lens and easier then the 75, 90 and 135.I do find that having the 1.25X mag on the camera does help which I rarely use with any other lens. My magnifier – the cheap one from eBay, with "Japanese glass" – arrived this morning. It makes a big difference to focusing the 50mm and doesn't appear to do anything retrograde to the quality of the viewfinder. The only slight downside is that with your eye in the normal position, the viewfinder LEDs are out of view, though you can see them by "peering in" to the finder. I don't really miss them 'cos I don't use them much, but if you're very keen on them this might be an issue. Still, for £26 plus P&P, I'm very happy! Ah - I should have qualified, I find it hard because I'm using it at f1.4, at relatively close range, and the subject is moving. It's not actually the lens ergonimics, but the punishingly shallow dof that is difficult. Mine backfocusses rather badly as well, so that doesn't help. It's definitely easier to focus than my 90/2, but in both cases the magnifier really is vital for me.

Albert4321 Posted October 1, 2007 Share #19 Posted October 1, 2007 The hood for the 50mm Summilux LHSA seems better than my 50Lux ASHP.
Shootist Posted October 1, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted October 1, 2007 The hood for the 50mm Summilux LHSA seems better than my 50Lux ASHP. The hood on the 50mm Lux ASPH standard lens is built in to the lens. Like the 75 Cron ASPH, extend and turn to the left to lock in the out position.
