dpattinson Posted September 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's tough to focus at f1.4, and the backfocus on the lens doesn't help - but this one turned out quite nicely

dpattinson Posted September 30, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted September 30, 2007 thanks guys, I've been practicing focussing this lens on-the-move at f1.4 and it really isn't easy. I use the magnifier, which helps - but I'm so used to the 24mm for street work that when I 'tweak' the focus to follow a moving subject I end up overcompensating wildly. I really should just give in and shoot it at f2, but when you get the focus right it looks great.
fotografr Posted October 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 2, 2007 David--I'm a little stunned by the lack of response here. As of this morning, there were 197 views of this terrific portrait and I'm only the 3rd person (excluding you) to post a comment. I hope you don't take that as an indication of the quality of your photograph, because it is superb. You obviously thought about what you were doing and took the time in post processing to make it look the way you wanted it to look. I hope you keep posting your work, although this experience might make you wonder, "why bother?"
semrich Posted October 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 2, 2007 I'm with Brent on this one, it's the first time I looked at it and it was well worth it. Well done.
beramos Posted October 2, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) David, this is a excellent image. Superb DOF that annuls the face of the person of the bottom that could distract a little. Pretty position of the capture. Great work.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted October 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 2, 2007 David excellent but try something for me. The right side is a waste , come in on the right which will bring it in more and that background person will pop better. Hope you don't mind i did it
jaa Posted October 2, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 2, 2007 Superb photo. And if your 'lux has as much backfocus as mine not easy at all to get...
dpattinson Posted October 2, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted October 2, 2007 Thanks for the responses all. I was pretty happy with the image, it's quite a tough lens to use for street wide open - and the M8 seems to punish a slight oof much more than tri-x ever did. I sure made a lot of blurry ones that evening as well, but that's part of the game really - makes it more fun to give up the zone focus. Guy, thanks for the input. I don't often crop, but your version does seem to have more punch. I intend to send the 50 in for coding and a focus adjustment - it's out about 3-5cm at one meter from my (very basic) testing. Hopefully the backfocus can be fixed and that will make life a little easier.
