The thread idea is a good one, but as was said earlier, some ground rules should be set out before posting begins. My thoughts.

1. Get special dispensation from the mods to post here.I think I am like many here who do not look at the photo threads.

2. Post only photos - no comments, just makes looking at the photos more difficult

3. Attach a sticky to it and keep it there for a specified period of time.

4. Depending on the number of submissions and the quality and the overall sentiment decide if it is worth self publishing, I know somebody with that experience so I could make some initial inquiries at the very least. That may be something to consider if/when other things fall into place. A word of warning, it is a labour of love and would cost money, not make money.

5.One photo only, you be the self censor. If you've taken a shot and then you take a better one then delete the first posting. Can you even do that on this forum?

6. Like Jaap said, make it open ot all M8 users, pro and amateur. I'd hate to limit it by eliminating some of the best photographers using the camera.

And now a quick check to make sure that I haven't repeated myself or said something twice or said it again or paraphrased myself or.............

Maybe one nomination of another's photograph allowed as well?

Anyway, I'll post my three later, I'll have to have a hard look. My best shot was in a thread that should have been moved to the photoforum but wasn't Does that count?

I like the rules. I'd like to submit a photo. I'd like to add the following:

1. Near the photo, a title, and

2. In an appendix, *all* the tech data anyone could want:

a. stuff from exif,

b. stuff from workflow,

c. info about the photographer (including email?)

The title of the book: I LUF my Leica M8

Regards to all,

I have had my M8 since last December. I had (and still have) a MP.

Not to throw a damper on anyone's birthday celebrations but I can honestly say that in the last year I haven't had one photograph that has come close to the "magic" I was able to achieve shooting B&W with the MP. Sean Reid talks about the way a lens draws. Perhaps there is something more abstract with the way film draws as opposed to digital and that is what I find attractive.

I will never sell my MP but don't have the same feelings towards my M8. I haven't totally given up on the M8 though.

It's not the tool that is creative, but it is the tool that fits your hand that helps create..If you are better with a film M, why not? It is totally personal. For me the M8 has pushed the M6 into the second-hand shop. But that's just me

(...) would it be possible to think of a BOOK ? (...)

A great idea.

But additional to all other advice, I think, a professional typesetting/layout is needed. I really dislike these selfmade-microsoft-word-touch. Please think of that, too.

Some days ago I was thinking that to celebrate this 1st birthday we of the forum could do something... and I thought that in the photo section of the forum (and really in other sections, too) there are LOT of FINE pics taken with M8 (mine not included...:o )... would it be possible to think of a BOOK ? "M8 : his first year with amateurs" or similar.

- A project manager to keep the accounting of the project

- A project leader with experience in photo book publishing to define the graphics, format, style etc..

- Picture selection made by mods/admin

- Divided as hereby (People, nature etc...)

- Money coming from members (plus, hopefully, a discrete sponsoring from Leica Co...) on voluntary basis + a fixed amount for the published authors (...a tout honneur...)

- Distribution through photo dealer channel

- Who is THE PUBLISHER ? To be defined ...

Is it an impossible project to achieve ? Just to cheat, I would be happy to contribute with, say, 150 or 200 Euros + buying 3 or 4 copies (... without asking for my photo on it... :p ... must be a serious project).

I have NO IDEA about how to budget a project like this... no idea at all of the costs... but if someone of us has experience about, he can tell me if is at all absurd or not an idea.

Luigi, a brilliant idea, and, I think there are ways to do it well, inexpensively, and very nicely. Two come to mind immediately:

1) book--Blurb.com allows one to upload and self-publish digital books which, if set up properly, can then be ordered by anyone in unlimited quantities. The quality is surprisingly good. You can see more at Self publish with free BookSmart software for Windows or Mac | Blurb.

2) Set up a website on pbase.com or flickr.com or similar. Have one or more administrators administer it--if I have my one favorite M8 photograph, I would have to upload it to him/her, along with exif data and caption, and they would then post it.

3) Perhaps do both.

I have written and edited two photographic books and many articles and am about to do a couple of digital books on Blurb.com. I would be more than happy to help out with this project. Or perhaps a site devoted to image shot with any M8 during the first year of its existence could be set up on this forum. I kind of like the independence of doing it outside of the forum, but am open to any approach.

Thanks for suggesting it. It's a nice way to focus on the work we are all generating. I just took 4500 shots with my M8 on a trip to Peru and Easter Island and came away with some pretty beautiful stuff if I do say so myself. Hardest thing would be to come up with "the one" image to submit.

The LUG did something similar last year. Everyone who wanted to participate emailed two high resolution Jpegs to the person creating the book using the Blurb software.

We agreed in advance to rezise the images so that all Jim had to do was drop them into the template.

The prints are pretty good, not upto the standard of 'normal' photographic books, but perfectly acceptable.

You can see a few pages - and an interview with Jim who organised it here...

Blurb now have European printers as well as US, so postage costs are reduced for those of us this side of the pond.

If this idea indeed takes off, as it seems it already has, would someone kindly post information on the German forum as well. I have seen many fabulous M8 photos posted in the German Foto-Forum.

I'm happy my idea seems to take on... and I too thought to the German side of the Forum... how to reach them ? I think that if the idea is to start with a "bag" of pics 1 or 3 per capita... well would be sufficient to establish a single "bag" if possible...

... But I'd prefer a single language editing for the book...:)

And if this book maybe one day will be born, I agree with "M8-fan" observation about AVOIDING self made editing with simple PC tools : pics are fine and deserve a professional editing style.

Bill, I'd say ok to author - title (simple....) and basic data (lens), but no more, for me... a book with hundreds of pics each one with infos on workflow, to me is boring ... I think the basic message we want to share and transmit is "look ! we enjoy this gear !"

Luigi, I thought the detailed info would be suitable as an appendix. It probably would look ugly in the picture book and maybe a word document that we can all access could carry the detailed info.

How do people feel about having the photographer's email with the picture?
