28 and 50 or 35 and 75 APO SC lenses. Either pair will do, and not really all that heavy. Were it me though, I'd be packing 24/35/75 and my M10M and M10R. My SL2 and L lenses have barely been touched since acquiring these M bodies, even for landscape applications.

Did you ever try the Summilux SL? It is big, heavy and slow moving focus.

When I travel a take zoom lens on the SL2, 24-90mm, and something to look good at night like Summilux-M 50 or 35.

Easy to carry all day that you don't have to leave it in the hotel when you go to dinner.

+1

If I decide the SL rather than M system is more suitable for the trip I too take a 24-90SL and a fast 35 or 50 M lens.
The former because of it's extraordinary versatility and quality.  The latter because it's fast and light.

The 24-90 SL should also do all of your landscape unless you really feel you need a wider lens.
With 47MP files you can easily crop files shot at 90m if you think you might need a longer lens.

I do agree withe Robb.  If I'm only taking two primes with an M camera they're most likely going to be 28 and 50.

I would keep it light, take one lens, an M 50. Unless you’re shooting wildlife, that’s all you need. You will get into the rhythm on one focal length, forget about the gear and just take pictures. I think Ralph Gibson said something like 90% of the world’s most important pictures were taken on a 50 mm. I’ve got a bunch of SL & M lenses, if I bring out a single 21, 28 or 35 or 75, I almost always find myself wishing I had brought along something to compliment that one focal length. I absolutely never have that thought when I bring a 50 out.

Hi Adam,

I've used a SL601 and now have an SL2-S - both have 24mpx sensors but the SL2-S is much better handling higher ISO.  I've found the 24-90 does all I want in relation to the kinds of photography that you've indicated. Before the Covid lockdown I visited Berlin with the SL 601 + Leica 24-90 which were superb for street photography there.  On visits to S. Africa I've used them for close up work and cropped in. (Also used a Leica 90-280 for wildlife with satisfying results).  I have a WATE - and rarely use it.  For what you want to do I'd go with a 24-90 on my SL2-S without any concerns.

Enjoy the trip.  Graeme

Thanks to everyone for their input and wisdom. I have decided on a two lens prime setup, so that I can enjoy my trip to Madagascar.

Leica Summilux-m 24mm

Leica Summilux-SL 50mm

I plan on being a more integral part of this community since I have learned so much through this forum.

Thanks again,

Adam

It's been a few years, how did your trip go? Were the Summilux M 24 and Summilux SL 50 all you needed?

I ended up taking a 21mm Summilux, the awesome 24-90 Vario-SL and an 120mm Apo Macro Summarit-S.  That was the right combination.

I wonder, did you not take photographs of the rather interesting and unique fauna? For most tourists that is the prime reason for their visit. I would always take a wildlife lens

I have a lot of great pictures to share. I just have to downsize them because they’re obviously straight from camera and too big for this site so I’ll downsize them and I’ll upload a few. I really love this country and I would go back again if the opportunity presents itself.
