New product / promos / etc. banners are becoming more than a little annoying!

This is what I see on every page of the forum now.

It makes no difference that I have pressed the (x) to close the banners, they come back every time. It makes no difference that I have visited the linked pages, they are shown anyway. It's not a great experience and there seem to be more and more of them. They are clearly not even linked to our selected language (which would already reduce the number by half) and not linked to the areas of interest defined in our profiles.  It would be nice to at least have a "show promos" on/off switch in the settings.

It’s particularly the banners that are annoying. It’s fine to show them once to bring new products (I was totally unaware of the new M6 🤪) to our attention but once we’ve seen the banner and closed it, it should not be displayed again and again. UX 101. The ads are not so annoying, although I’ll never click on one.

My top banners disappear after clicking the "x "

The banners ARE closed when I click the “x”, I wrote this in the initial post. BUT when I go to a different forum page the banners ARE displayed again.

I use an ad blocker too but I’ve temporarily disabled it for tests I’m doing. But I don’t mean the ads, only the promo banners.

In my browser (Firefox) they go away once I close them using the x. They reappear, though, when the threads change where those notices come from. Close them again.

You might have to check your cookie settings.

Edit: I have to close them on every single device I use for browsing the forum. The information that I have seen them definitely is kept in the browser.

I can see why that would be annoying,  especially when there are several banners.  Maybe someone with knowledge of the site's design can help.  Mine disappear and never return after closing them.  As Pop mentioned they had to be closed on each device used for browsing the site.  That tells me that it isn't determined by the site or your login as much as the device's address.

Could something be changing your computer's address?  VPN?  Just grasping at straws here.

I don't see them, once I have clicked the x, and as long as I am logged in. Maybe because I am a paying member?

Nope it’s the same for me, they are usually displayed. Even marking the forum read.

As the banners don’t seem to take our forum profile settings (language or product interest) into consideration, I’m not surprised that the banners are visible on each device. I would expect that once a banner has been closed the forum software would either set a cookie on the client side or store the info server side.

Often I do see the forum cookie settings show up. I always refuse everything except the necessary ones. Maybe that is the issue but I have no idea how I can get to those forum settings.

Please everyone, please read the first post. I know the banners are closed by using the “x” at the right side of the banners. Yes that works, but they reappeared every time a new forum page is opened. That is the issue.

It’s a good idea, but cookies are stored on the device and in my experience as a web developer although IP can be stored in the cookie data I’ve never seen it done. Cookies are not inherently IP dependent.

I also reject all the cookies I can, and I have Consent-o-matic running as an add-on to Chrome (MacOS).

I sometimes have to reject them again if I log in on a different device (either a Windows PC or an iphone) then return to this one. As if the server can only remember the settings for one device at a time.

The main thing about these banners is that they take up quite a bit of screen space, which is especially annoying on a phone. It would be nice if the site, not the browser, would remember that the user has clicked them away.

That depends on your browser. For security reasons my browsers wipe their history when closing, cookies are cleared and trackers are blocked. Logins get stored in my keychain, not in the browser; bookmarks are retained. I cannot be traced by IP by using a VPN.That means that these banners pop up all the time. Given that they double up in German and English having two banner events is already quite annoying.

A week later… banners still showing. No VPN, no clearing of cookies, history or any data at all.
