Thanks for bringing that thread up! Very useful test and confirms my general feelings. Regarding the overhanging base piece, what makes you think the SL3 will also have the memory cards on the side? 🙂 (I agree with you, I'm just playing devil's advocate... I can't imagine they would eschew the "professional" norm of having dual card slots and move to the M11 model of internal storage coupled with a card in the battery chamber).

Hmm, hadn't thought about them moving to internal plus 1-SD. Not sure if the pros would riot over that or not. But the capacity of the M11 battery (1800mAh) and SL2 battery (1860mAh) are nearly the same, so why switch? It would leave those with an SL3 + SL2 or SL2-S as backup with two battery systems.

The only reason I can think of to switch is if the M11 battery solves whatever the issue is leading to shutdowns that some face with the SL2/SL2-S. I have not experienced those issues but I believe I recall some theorizing that the voltage dips too low too early in the battery curve. I think it would be better if they could update/redesign/respec the SL battery to increase capacity and/or improve the voltage curve in a way that maintained some amount of backwards compatibility.

Some of us were just born suckers for the green variants. I did own an R3 Safari back in the 90s, and I’m certain it took better film shots than the regular R3 😂

I agree!  Green cameras are better.  Why would Leica charge more? 😂

The green looks good enough that I’d be willing to do that cladding swap with leather if I ever needed to.

My next service will include a green leather replacement.  Kevlar is showing its age.

I just got my M11 so I haven’t done any “proper” testing, but there doesn’t seem to be much between the SL2-s and M11 in terms of high ISO performance. In fact I think if you down res to 24MP the M11 might even be a hair better.

If the SL3 manages to match the video performance of the SL2-s and uses the same battery as the M11 then I will be upgrading for sure. Really curious to see what they do with the Q3 and SL3 batteries… my hopes of having a unified battery across all bodies was dashed when the M11 didn’t use the SL/Q2 battery. I can only hope the standardize on the M11 battery moving forward!

One would think the IBIS in the SL2 variants would give some advantage over the M11, no?

For hand-held shooting, absolutely. At dusk shooting landscape, I rarely have to shoot over ISO 320 on the SL2-S. But when I was using the M11, I would be at ISO 1200–1600 in the same light.

For non-moving subjects, it absolutely does have an advantage. I just don’t think if it as “high iso” advantage since they have basically the same ceiling for me. The SL2-S just doesn’t need to hit it as often…

The SL2-S Reporter release was COMPLETELY overshadowed by the new M6 introduction.

Yes, Leica moved the bar on photography

  • painted one existing camera green
  • gave one existing camera a facelift to look like a slightly older camera
  • continued production of a very old lens.

I was told “no” by Josh at Leica Miami. If anyone has heard otherwise, please say so!

Looks like now you can. Mine arrives tomorrow and is en route but the voucher didn’t work when I paid on Friday. Am speaking to them now and asking for a 650€ refund. Fingers crossed…

I emailed Leica directly and they said the discount is not valid on the Reporter.
