Michael-IIIf Posted September 20, 2007 Share #1  Posted September 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well it seems my D2 has been getting jealous of all its friends having trips to Solms.  It threw a wobbly today, then got a grip and carried on as if nothing had happened. I can only imagine this is the start of a slippery slope that leads to total sensor failure.  The advice I'm looking for is:-  (1) Although it now seems to working fine can anyone please tell me if Solms will take it in for the warranty work?  (2) It currently lives in London. It was bought in the Classic Camera (Pied Bull Yard). What's the best way to send it on its holiday to Solms; take it back to Pied Bull Yard or send it to Germany myself?  tia  Michael

noddy Posted September 21, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted September 21, 2007 I sent mine to Milton keynes. They sent it straight on to Solms. MK gave me an 'items received' acknowledgment. Â All seems very well organised. Â try ringing them first. Â Andy
wda Posted September 21, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted September 21, 2007 I endorse Alan's and Andy's advice. Mine went direct to MK who quickly processed it to Germany forecasting 4-6 weeks. That was four weeks ago and today I learned that the repair is complete awaiting shipping from Germany. Probably get it late next week. Can't wait! george_b Posted September 22, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted September 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a letter confirming its receipt from MK and that it wiil go to Solms. My dilema is that they have offered me a D3 as a special price of in exchange for my D2, oh dear what should I do. Perhaps I'll have to do my homework on D3s, anyone have an opinion? ajthornbury Posted September 22, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted September 22, 2007 George, it all depends on what you want. They offered me the same deal, but I declined because I thought the D2 was lighter, quieter and more ergonomic. the difference between 5 Mp and 7.5 is marginal at A4 size any way. Alan  George, I endorse Alan's view. It did not take me many seconds to reach the conclusion that a repaired D2 whould be worth a lot more than a discounted D3. But the main factors are as described by Alan.  David
george_b Posted September 24, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted September 24, 2007 Thanks guys, I think I'll stay with the D2. I have used it at A3, suitably cropped, etc and have been happy. I get used to carrying a light in weight camera some days.
dugby Posted September 24, 2007 Share #11  Posted September 24, 2007 Sorry to burst your bubble, but the D3 / L1 is much much more than MP differences over the D2.  I have both and advise you to re-read this forum on the differences. Sure I still like my D2, but the images from the D3 / L1 and its useability vastly exceeds the D2's capabilities.  There are some seriously good sample shots from D3's and even better ones from L1s on wwwdotpbasedotcom  Many a shot i've missed with the slowness of the D2, i now always 'nail' it with my L1. Mine yeterday showed banding on the screen and on the shots I then took for the first time ever (only about 20 seconds)and Then worked perfectly, I was also wondering if it was the start of a slppery slope or if it could just have been something to do with the light or anything else really.  Thanks  Andy

The first time this happened I had coloured bands on preview and on the resulting image, after about 4 exposures it 'cleared', to return the next day when I used again. At that point I reckoned it was time to contact MK.
gverdon Posted September 25, 2007 Share #14  Posted September 25, 2007 Michael, mine went to Leica Switzerland because of randomly (and then yet rare) failures... I suppose they are perfectly able to recognize signs of a faulty sensor.  Gérald

amedick Posted September 25, 2007 Share #16  Posted September 25, 2007 My D2 has just got the magenta tinge......  When you send your D2 to MK, what do you need to include, just camera, or do you need to send battery, memory card, lens shade etc????  Thanks  John
george_b Posted September 25, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted September 25, 2007 When you send your D2 to MK, what do you need to include, just camera, or do you need to send battery, memory card, lens shade etc???? Â Just the bare camera plus lens cap; no battery, no strap, no memory card, no lens hood or filter on the lens. If you can phone Customer Services @ MK you find them most helpful and they can reconfirm what and what not to send.
Michael-IIIf Posted September 27, 2007 Author Share #18  Posted September 27, 2007 UPDATE 27th Sept  I was in touch with Solms and got an immediate reply letting me know they would cover the work (which I already knew) and the choice of how to get it back to them was whichever route would be the most convenient to me: retailer, Leica UK or directly to Solms.  As I live within walking distance of The Classic Camera - where I bought it - I rang them and asked what their procedure is. They were very helpful and informed me that they simply require the camera, nothing else, none of the packing, boxes nor battery nor card. I dropped it in yesterday afternoon and they told me in would be six to eight weeks. We shall see.  They talked me through the D3 option but I'd already decided against it. I played with some M4s and nearly bought a black one - but that's a different story!  For the record - to answer some of the questions above - the failure I was experiencing was erratic too. When first switched on it would do WEIRD things but then after one or two shots it would settle down and behave normally.  If I ever see it again I'll let you know
