Looking at the specs for the new M6 and the old one, and for other M bodies.

  • New M6: the Leica website says it is 40mm thick.
  • Old M6: the wiki here says it is 38mm thick
  • My own M4: the wiki says 33.5, while I measure the baseplate to be 31mm, the difference made up by the rear door (etc)
  • M240 (the last digital M I owned): the wiki says 42mm
  • M10: the Leica website says 37.5.
  • M11: the Leica website says 38.5.

Was there a step change in thickness between M4 and later cameras? Or do they all have the same essential body thickness (and baseplate dimensions), but with different protrusions such as preview levers, wind-on lever etc?

I am asking because although I am content with my M4, and have no need for and certainly no intention of buying a new M6.........the idea of a new body with built in metering occasionally waves at me from a distance.

The body size was reduced with the introduction of the M10, very much in line with the film Ms.

Aren't the base plates compatible between the M4 and the original M6?

They were. The M6 baseplate lost the key to open IXMOO cassettes and users would swap them out. Correct me if I’m wrong but the baseplates were interchangeable up until the introduction of the MP.

The top plate thickness of the M11, M4, MP and M6 (non-TTL) seem to be all the same:

Zeiss Ikon is one of the few cameras I regret selling. Wanted to buy one later again but the prices already skyrocketed. Had an M7 and Hexar RF. Sold the M7, kept the RF.

Had the M7, Bessa 3A, Zeiss Ikon Zm, two Minolta CLEs.

Kept the M7, sold the rest.  Bought a second M7 because I got a killer deal on a last model run one and just love this camera.  Serial # in the 4xxxxx range.

I always wanted to try a Konica RF, but am scared away now about all the failures and no-one willing to touch.

Indeed, that might convince me to buy one, plus the anti-flare coating. I was never happy with the M wind levers on the MP/M-A.

I have seen many M6 and M7 cameras retrofitted with the classic MP style wind levers.

But I have never, ever, ever seen it the other way round.

I have both, I like both.

Maybe they measured the M6 in a chunky Luigi half case?

M6 (bought in 1985) has the baseplate key for the IXMOO, but I know laer ones did not. I don't know when it changed.

It may have been with the big M6 when Leica moved production to Solms. I had a early M6 and it had the baseplate key but I’ve seen a lot of later classics and TTLs without it

If with the M6, Leica proves that there is a market for new film rangefinder cameras, Cosina will not be far behind with new Voigtlander cameras in both M and LTM mounts.

Leica has already proven there is a market for new film rangefinder cameras with the MP and M-A.

The silver lining in all of this is that Leica might be able to make enough spare parts to start supplying independent repair shops, who are the backbone of the affordable, used Leica market. If they don't, boy oh boy am I going to be mad.

No one has mentioned Leica released instruction manual. I take a look and snip some pages:

Oh, that's low battery warning.

I guess my 1978 Canada 35 Summilux better stay on my M4.

As original M6, B as battery off.

Frameline capturable area on each distance.

"semi-spot" metering area on each frame lines.

Thank you - that's what I wanted to check.

Whilst I might lust after the newly released 35mm 'Steel Rim' I am completely gas-free when it comes to the new M6 :)

Me too…
A smaller cheaper camera like the older Leica/Minolta CLE would be tempting. But not just a M6 clone for 5k€…
