Washington Square Park. For those who don't know it's the unofficial beginning of 'The Village' and New York University. Back in the 80's it had a much sharper edge to it then it does now. I was young with long hair and would constantly be followed by Marijuana 'salesmen' speaking in hushed tones telling me the particular variety they had in stock.

Always loved Greenwich Village and still do.

Vintage photographs such as these are more than just "pictures" - they are actually historical records that are both essential and indispensable.

It would be nice if those who so stridently object to street photography nowadays could come to understand this.

Mike -

A delightful shot.  In the '80s it was a 24/7 drugstore, as were other places, such as Bryant Park (though Bryant Park was always scarry at the time).  I was working downtown at the time, and on one particular street shady characters would say, in furtive soto voce, "Executive smokes?"  Now NYU has bought up huge amounts of Greenwich Village, and many other places in town.  At least it is a world class university, able to hire top professors since much of their operating budget comes from foreign student paying full boat.

Ohio University, Athens, Ohio

I'm such an idiot, can't believe I didn't recognize that. I was a grad student there and I just visited last December as my daughter was considering OU before she decided on UIUC. From what I remember, OU is the reason Kent State happened. OU students took over the administration building during the anti-Vietnam War protests, and when the students at Kent State tried to do the same, the Ohio Governor told the National Guard to do whatever it took to stop them because, "We're not going to loose another campus like OU!"

Do I assume correctly that you were a student there in the 1960's?

Best, -Tim

Ah, yes. May 4, 1970. Too long a story to delve into here but that event changed the course of my life rather dramatically.
