I'm in the UK, yes.

There are a couple of 'excellent' SL's at official Leica stores here and an ex-demo SL at a reputable camera shop.

My confidence in the SL has been slightly dented.

It’s a great camera.  You just got a flawed one.  Go to the reputable camera shop with an SD card, and try out the ex-demo.

Er....the OP lives in the UK😉

The main point is that trusted major Leica dealers have stock. Many here buy internationally, and dealers like Leica Miami ship overseas.  Still best if one can shop locally, however.

Thanks, it's just completely uneconomical. UK Customs charges 20% VAT plus import duty on the value of the camera including the shipping costs.

You are paying 1/3 again on the price before you even consider the poor exchange rate between the UK pound and the stronger dollar.

Wouldn't it make more sense to buy a S5 rather than a first generation SL?

Maybe, but historically I have preferred simpler cameras with less whiz bang features and less buttons and dials. I hated my XT-3 although it took great pictures.

I would say, having owned both cameras, that the S5 sensor is better, and the IBIS is really nice to have. The S5 is a little less comfortable to hold, and the EVF is inferior to the SL.

All the whiz-bang features can be ignored once the camera is set up.
