Why I always wish for longer on my camera... but still couldn't resist trying.. CL with CV 75mm 1.5 M. 😀.  Actually ended up with about 12 images, all focussed well enough even when he entered the trees, just not close enough for real interest, click for better view please.

A challenging subject when equipped for general photography, Jane. If local, why not observe the bird's regularity so that you could go out with a longer zoom lens? Most bird photographers recce their subjects to increase their chances of getting a more compelling shot. Not easy, I know, unless you could also carry a V Lux, for example, to make use of its long reach, and relatively compact mass.

Yes David, all true.  Often encounter buzzards around here, no shortage of them these days😊 and I have many images taken with different kit.  I rarely leave the house without two camera's and give some thought to what I may encounter, nearly always having three dogs in tow I always have them to photograph.   Yesterday was the CL with 75mm and a Q2, neither any good for this subject but still enjoyed myself.

Have to admit I have been posting elsewhere on this site, but this is pure CL. First sunny day for a while, new snow.
