Yay... I can now see what the subject is, think I'm a bit slow in my old age and need to understand an image, natural colours and pleasant composition.  The 60mm look to be very sharp.

Yes, the 60mm is a fine lens.

I've been going back to my early photography lessons lately: my big brother would leave me one body and one lens for three months with instructions like; "Yes, it's a wild angle, and not generally the best for portraits (or whatever the subject might be).... so figure out how to shoot a decent portrait with a wide angle....next time you'll be using a telephoto."   By the time I was 16 I had a reasonable idea of how to make good use of a few primes.

So recently I've pretty much kept one lens on the camera and left the others on the boat except for last Friday night when I knew that I wasn't going to walk far enough round the park to use the 60mm for this one shot with the 23mm.

I definitely needed somebody like your big brother in my life, seems like you were given some excellent grounding.    As it was I was almost fifty before I picked up a camera that needed anything but p&s, have learnt very little since, so please take no notice of me whatsoever.   Really like this 23mm shot.

Not sure I can find the emoji that expresses complete disbelief in that statement. Seriously, Jayne, you're one of the very best on this entire, highly impressive, site.

@gfweir I started with a 40mm on my fathers old canonet at 10 years old, then moved to a yashica TLR 80mm a few years later. Then a 50 on an slr, and then a 35 rangefinder. All in the first 42 years of my life. I bought my first zoom lens in 2005. Haven't bought a prime since.

@Boojay At least be thankful you didn't have an older brother that treated you as inferior at every turn.

Well when I was 15 I had saved up enough for my own camera....I proudly walked into Roberto Matassa's camera shop in Fort William and asked him to order a Zenith E , the E because I wanted the fancy one with a built-in light meter.....

Mr. Mattassa demonstrated an acute attack of apoplexy as he jumped up and down, waving his arms wildly all the while declaring that he would never allow any Zenith into his shop. He metaphorically dragged me across the counter and told me the only reason he didn't throw me out on the street was that he knew and liked my eldest brother. AND because of this respect he had for him he would find something for me.... After much rummaging around he produced what to me looked like the ugliest contraption I had ever seen and told me that I could have it for 26 pounds (the same price as the Zenith E)....and he'd even let me have a used Weston Euromaster for an additional 15 pounds which he'd allow me to pay over time as long as I promised never to let anyone know that he'd given credit... I left the store not knowing if I'd been had or if the fates had smiled on me.

That Exa 500 with a 50mm Zeiss lens was spectacular.   I learned a lot with it and from Mr. Matassa.... He shot 10x8 transparency landscapes for clients around the world and although I no longer have the Exa I do still have that Weston Euromaster meter.

What a wonderful story gfweir and thank you for sharing it with us. Those were the days when good dealers went well beyond the call of duty. I wonder what Mr Matassa would have made of today's camera technology.
