My wish is that the launch of the Q3 be delayed as long as possible, ideally for years.

That is one of the best proposals I ever read. Clearly this would avoid all fights here in the forum. I hope that Leica reads here.

Au contraire, mon ami.  Such a delay would merely postpone the inevitable.  😁

I do not feel the need for more megapixels but a Q3 should have improved AF and eye detection - at least on par with the SL2 (preferably better).  Improved dynamic range would be nice, as would a higher end EVF.  I personally would prefer a 40mm or 50mm lens but would take 28mm if the above comes true.

I want more megapixels AND the M11's ability to save a smaller number. That way I could shoot at 24mp at 28mm, and something approaching the same at 75mm. 171mp should do it 🙂

To be less ambitious, a 97mp sensor would give us 9mp at 90mm. Good enough.

You won't get better than SL2 performance. I bet the Q3 will have the Maestro III processor, same as the SL2 and SL2s. That means you'll get the same performance level of these two cameras, which is good now. Maybe slightly slower if Leica bumps resolution to 60mp, but not by much.

A BSI sensor has faster readout speeds, which can lead to faster AF. Leica Q had Maestro II, Leica Q2 has Maestro III. It makes sense that Q3 will have Maestro IV.

For my ideal Q3, in order of importance:

  1. Same amazing iso performance of the Q2M
  2. 35mm focal length. It could f1.4 or f1.7 or f2, but please a smaller lens than the actual Q2 size.
  3. A decent AF-C
  4. A 'smart' joystick for the AF
  5. 47-50-60-102MP, whatever.

Leica, do that, and I'll buy it tomorrow. But I'm afraid that (at least) for the low light capabilities in a Q color camera, we still need to wait a few years. That's why I will (probably) pass for the next Q3

Leica Q2 has the crappy Maestro II, that's why Leica will go cheap and use the Maestro III, leaving the IV for the SL3

In we look at the economy of scale, it makes sense to use the previous gen (Maestro II for Q2 and Maestro III for Q3). The Maestro III is also driving the M11, though the lack of autofocus makes it easier to use a less powerful chip to drive the camera.

Anyway, we haven't seen new image processors from Panasonic and Leica. It'd be a good marketing strategy for both of them to launch the new chips with their top of the line.

But hey, should the Q3 have a Maestro IV, that would be VERY welcome!

I'm curious why you say that - you don't think there is any chance that Leica would adopt hybrid phase-detect and contrast-detect AF if they use the 60MP Sony sensor which is capable of it?  Sigma did for the fp L when they adopted that sensor.

I would be disappointed if Leica used the Maestro III for the Q3, and wonder if they would need to move to something more powerful if adopting hybrid AF.  It is certainly possible they could try and go that route though.

I'd say it's too late for the coming generation. Maybe in a Q4? Panasonic aknowledged that phase detect can be a reality in the next years, but even if they are considering it, it will take a while. And development times are long. The Q3 will allegedly hit the shelves in the next 12 months, but its development has -give or take- started 3 years ago. Too late for a drastic change like phase detect, the hardware would need to be optimized, retested and fine tuned from scratch. Every time you change a hardware component, you don't know what else you're breaking. Not to mention software optimization, but Leica doesn't seem to be concerned with software quality, given the M11 issues, the busted SL2 firmware update, Fotos app etc.

Sigma has embraced phase detect, but their software devs are pretty much the worst in the market. Have you tried the fp L? Phase detect is not a magic powder that you sprinkle on a camera and you 100% nail eyes on a person running in a crowded scene. It takes both the hardware and the software side to make it work.

All that talk about cropping. Yet a cropped 28mm photo will always remain 28mm. Image compression is simply different on 35 or even 50mm. I’d love to see a longer focal length on the Q3, but that won’t happen.

The idea of the Q is the gateway for people who are not familiar with photographer. I think, from the business perspective, Leica is smart with the Q series. Really smart indeed. The focal length is roughly the same as most smartphones, full auto mode, ease of use and great result even for those who has never use a camera. My cousin was able to help me take a photo with my family using the Q, it was her first time with a Leica, so simple that she thought the M is just about the same. Despite many of us hating on the 28mm, it's is the most versatile for the targeted consumers. Best point and shoot camera in the world.

The Q has been embraced by professional and art photographers as well.

That's true, it is a fantastic choice for many, not that it is for just amateurs. Where I am from, I see rich kids with the Q because they want a Leica but don't know how to use the M or SL. Nick Ut, the photographer that captured "Napalm girl" also have the Q2. My next camera will be the Q2M or Q2 Reporter. Love that camera.

This claim always boggles my mind. The idea that an almost casual photographer used to the cell phone would then buy a $5000 fixed lens camera from a largely unknown brand?????

They are much more likely to buy a cheaper camera from mainstream Sony, Panasonic or Fuji.

I use mine for work alongside a Sony A9. I like the idea of the M11 but it just wouldn't fit the way I work. I will however get one when I retire. I'll sell on most (if not all) work gear, keep the Q and buy the latest M with a couple of lenses etc. So that will probably make it a M14 🤣

I think you would be surprised. There’s plenty of money sloshing around the global economy for a young affluent consumer to buy a Q2 in addition to their iPhone 13, even if they don’t know how to use a camera.
