Advertisement Posted August 14, 2022 Posted August 14, 2022 Hi Chaemono, Take a look here Leica 35mm APO ASPH Waiting time [merged]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jared Posted August 15, 2022 Share #82 Posted August 15, 2022 I got on a waiting list in, I believe, April (whenever I received my M11), and I just received mine last week. Took it out to Point Reyes Seashore this weekend, and I have to say I'm ecstatic with the results. Here are a few of them... I particularly liked the backlight clifftop view; super gentle rendering, wonderful handling of the glare from having the Sun in the frame, and the colors feel real and vibrant. All of these shots were at f/5.6. Welcome, dear visitor! Images, such as these, renew my faith that this lens is very much worth maintaining as a personal, eventual “grail-quest.” Thanks, for sharing your images, and your thoughts. I am very familiar with being presented with “sun in the frame” situations, and very much like the idea of “super gentle rendering,” in landscape and seascape images. I am very familiar with being presented with “sun in the frame” situations, and very much like the idea of “super gentle rendering,” in landscape and seascape images. Glad it was helpful! I have done test shots at all apertures, but real-world has been restricted to f/5.6 so far (the samples I posted). So far, no serious flaws in the lens aside from the limited maximum aperture, the price, and the availability. Very reminiscent of the 50 APO, but micro contrast is at an even higher level (slightly). It does have more distortion than the 1% indicated in the technical specifications would suggest, but the profile in Lightroom (or, presumably, Capture One) corrects it without any issues. So far, I'm really happy with mine. Obviously, it's still the honeymoon stage, so I dang well better be happy with it.
scott kirkpatrick Posted August 15, 2022 Share #86 Posted August 15, 2022 (edited) I have used the SL's APO 35 extensively, and its sharpness and flare-resistance fully support the hype that came from Peter Karbe's lectures in which he showed how the technical performance of the SL APO Summicrons exceeded all previous designs. So I wasn't in a hurry to try the M 35 APO Summicron. But I had a chance to get one last spring, and really love it. It has a more classic look, a tiny bit of moustache distortion in order to be an uncorrected film as well as a digital lens, and the extra close focusing is accomplished by simply letting the focus knob go all the way around instead of the usual restriction to 180 degrees. The result is that this lens has almost never been off of my M11. It has the sharpness and clarity of the SL 35, with a noticeably different, more old-fashioned look: Welcome, dear visitor! wdahab Posted August 17, 2022 Share #87 Posted August 17, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Got it today and it's pretty great. Right away I can say that having close focusing is brilliant, and the out-of-focus areas are just sublimely smooth. A couple of interesting things I noted which I just haven't seen mentioned in the few reviews out there, I had been curious about. This isn't a list of complaints, I love this lens already, but it's things I've noticed that folks interested in this unobtainable (becoming more obtainable?!) lens might want to know. The mfd is actually about 28.5-29cm, so it's a little bit close than reported. And since it's measured from the sensor plane, not the front element, that's feels a good deal closer than you'd otherwise think. It's about 21.5cm in front of the tip of the hood. You can get really nice and close. The detente at 0.7m isn't quite as strong as I'd like. It's strong enough to stop you when you're slowly focusing, but not strong enough to stop you if you're quickly shifting to close focus. I'll have to slow myself down. The detente is a *hair* closer than the minimum the rangefinder can do on its own (when I push past the detente I see the rangefinder move just a little bit) so you probably give up about an inch or so of optical rangefinder usefulness. The new hood is so much more useful than any of the other hoods. There's still some finder blockage from length, but it's really not bad enough to care about. This style hood should be available for all other lenses, honestly. Would I have preferred the built-in hood of the other APOs? Yeah, but mostly for aesthetics. This hood looks a little goofy, but it's super functional and I feel like it'll protect the front element a lot. The lens cap (which is designed to go over the hood) doesn't stay on with the hood on. Like, it's not worth keeping on at all because you'll just lose it, it fell off several times just getting lightly caught. The focus tab is still plastic, which is really a shame. It's textured like the metal ring it sits on, and I would have loved to see a lens of this calibre step up to a one piece metal focus ring. The lens is really a dream to use. It's so good, you're all gonna love it. The following are two images from my backyard, both from the M11, at F2.0, ISO 64. The close up is at absolute MFD, and the depth of field on this thing is crazy thin. But also you have no idea how good the detail capture, up close, on this lens wide open at MFD. It's insane. I'm gonna have fun taking some really great portraits with this thing. Welcome, dear visitor! chikyukfung Posted September 14, 2022 Share #88 Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) hi wdahab my copy has two problems: 1. the half-stop between f11 and f16 does not fall exactly midway between the two aperture markings. it's more toward the f16 marking (see the photo). 2. infinity focus is a bit off have you encountered these issues? Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! I can't see the image you attached, but I checked and yeah, the half-stop between f11 and f16 def is a bit closer to the f16 marking. Don't know why that is, but doesn't bother me at all. I never shoot with this above f5.6 or f8 anyway, and almost always just at f2. How do you mean infinity focus is off for you? For me, infinity focus is great. And I'm definitely seeing the beyond unbelievably crisp corners, which still gobsmack me when I compare them to the cron asph.

Same here. It's incredibly sharp across all apertures. Vlad seems to have encountered the same infinity focus issue. At infinity setting, the actual focal plane goes a bit beyond infinity on a TL2 with a Leica adapter, but works fine on an M10-P. I emailed Wetzlar and customer service recommended me to send the lens in. Could be a calibration problem. Dan Nelson Posted September 27, 2022 Share #93 Posted September 27, 2022 (edited) I got mine by refreshing Leica USA's website a couple of times a day for the past month or so. 99.9% of the time it gave me the "out of stock / back order / notify me" notice, but today I lucked out and I saw an "add to cart" button. I grabbed it immediately. When I checked out of curiosity 30 minutes later, it was "out of stock" again. https://leicacamerausa.com/leica-apo-summicron-m-35mm-f-2-asph-black-anodized.html By the way, I had previously entered my email address in the "notify me" box. I definitely did NOT get an email from Leica saying that it was in-stock! I hope y'all get lucky too! Dan Nelson Posted October 6, 2022 Share #94 Posted October 6, 2022 Just an update to my above post, I had a back focusing problem with my 35mm APO and I called the Leica USA online store to see if I could swap it with a replacement. They told me that they only got two of these lenses in the last three months.
