Hi there,

I know this is a foolish mistake to make. But I lost the lens cap for this hood that came with my lens. I think its this 'Leica Lens Hood for Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH & Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH'

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1262800-REG/leica_12470_lens_hood_for_elmarit_m.html/overview

Anyone have any experience on getting a replacement cap for this hood, I can't seem to confirm what the model number is.

@thinkscientist Depends which version 35 ASPH you have: the v5 cap is no longer available: go to the 2:00:26 mark in Red Dot forums Camera Talk 35mm talk YouTube video.
From their video, here is the best 3rd party replacement. I just bought one of these myself for a v4 Cron.

I wonder why the cap is no longer available for a current model lens.

How do I check which 35ASPH I know it's the latest one as I bought it brand new only a few month ago.

The v5 and v6 hoods are different on the ASPH 35 Crons, so it depends on which model you have. If you just bought the lens new at a Leica store, I would think you would have the latest v6.

The model number of a cap that fits the hood you linked to is 14212 - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/477392-REG/Leica_14212_Lens_Cap_for_16_18_21mm.html

(I now see that @lct already mentioned this above 👍)

I hope you still have the box (with model/serial), the receipt and/or the dealer’s phone number.

The OP said his lens has a 12470 hood. This hood is used on 2 lenses AFAIK (28/2.8 asph, 35/2 asph) and the hood cap for it is the 14212 as mentioned above. BTW the 14212 hood cap is also used on 21/3.4 asph, 24/3.8 asph, 28/2 asph, 35/1.4 FLE and 16-18-21/4 asph lenses among my own ones and perhaps others i'm not aware of but it should not be difficult to find anyway.

But he didn’t know which lens he bought (post #4), hence my comment. A good dealer will take care of a replacement cap with no problem.  Hopefully he bought from one.

The OP did not need to know which lens he bought nor to ask any dealer if he knew the reference of the hood. He said 12470 hood, hence 14212 hood cap can only be the solution  unless i'm missing something .

He said he didn’t know what lens he owned. I told him how to determine.  But he doesn’t need to know any of this, including part numbers, if he bought from a good dealer that will simply replace the part. He just bought it brand new a few months ago.  Simply call the dealer… no need for research…or forum inquiries.

OK Jeff but the OP's question was simple and the answer is simple too. Now, as they say, why doing simple when one can do complicated ;). Just kidding.

Exactly my point, thanks. If I bought a lens 3 months ago, from Leica Miami for instance, and lost a cap, I’d call Josh and tell him I lost it.  He’d have a new one in the mail shortly.  No need for part searches, hours or days of forum banter, etc.  Yes, the simple way.

I wonder if bhphotovideo would be the same.

Good service, but not as personal, and not staffed by dedicated Leica experts/geeks, at least not through their general phone line.  Josh would probably not only know the part number by heart, but would know about other viable options.  But I’m sure B&H would figure it out and order a part, probably retail charge.

I’ve stopped using mine as I have a filter on the lens along with the hood.
but yeah, as @lct said this is now a very common item to get a hold of.  A good place to look is popflash as they usually have them for a discount.
