Hours?  I know it can take a while doing a low level format but hours seems a bit excessive.  I'd suspect a bad card.   They do go bad once on a while.  I've probably thrown 2 or 3 away in the last 10 years.

The low level format/overwrite option can sometimes take forever. However, it is worth the wait if you are trying to figure out whether the card has any issues. The normal quick format option is very fast.

I finally worked out that the program stalled as my PC hibernated - all finished.  I have not had a chance to evaluate whether the formatting solved my lock up issue.

+1. I must have used the overwrite option a couple of times in 10+ years. My usual trick is to use the quick format to begin with and see if it works. It does generally if i judge by my lack of freezes but it's just empirical.
