What I am more curious about is why an online event is " strictly limited to 10 participants". Makes no real sense. Not Leica, They did do such introductory courses from time to time in the past, but their educational Academy has never been free. That distinguishes it from mere marketing. Most car manufacturers don't give free advanced driving courses with their cars either, for instance.  The number limitation is undoubtedly because it allows for personal attention, it is not a lecture but a workshop.
LocalHero1953 Posted May 16, 2022 Share #23  Posted May 16, 2022 (edited) I have been on several Akademie workshops: a two day workshop on using photography to connect to other creative fields (music, poetry...); a two day workshop separated by a weeklong homework project on story telling; a one day workshop on available light photography; a couple of others I can't remember. They were expensive but they matched what I was looking for, and I paid for the benefit of being in a small group, with the opportunities that gives for discussion. Interaction with the leader and other attendees was part of the value. The leaders were all excellent. They currently offer a 5-day in-person workshop in London with Bruce Gilden - at £1250 for 12 attendees that would be good value if you're into what he does (not for me, though). You do realize it comes with an instruction manual, not to mention plenty of tips and tricks by users, reviewers, etc online? There's no reason anyone NEEDS to take a course to learn how to use any camera, unless one wants to. Might want to save the outrage for something real and worthy... In other words, these and most 'gear' workshops have little to do with actually learning anything new or pushing the boundaries of one's artistry, but rather are a way for some well heeled gentleman to get out of the house for the afternoon and swap gear FOMO stories. Workshops with Magnum photogs etc a different deal...
jaapv Posted May 17, 2022 Share #30 Â Posted May 17, 2022 That is not quite fair. Leica Academy workshops are generally at a high level with excellent instructors.

Yes, I won't argue with you on that (and FTR I've helped teach an Akadamie workshop in the past). Of course workshops in general are not my thing - I hate photographing with others, first and foremost, though I think sometimes a long form with the likes of somebody like Gilden could push some buttons and re-engage some gears that have gotten stuck. Push me out of my comfort zone. But in the time frame of a short day it's primarily a social thing, and there's nothing wrong with that. As well I can see how it could be good for somebody who bought a CL on whim or recommendation and is new to photography.
ramarren Posted May 18, 2022 Share #32  Posted May 18, 2022 Please wake me when the outrage, indignation, and entitlement is over. It's noisome. A couple of my film cameras have not been "supported" for 50 years now, a couple other of my digital cameras have not been supported for a decade. They all seem to still be making photographs just fine. I'd rather think about that, and make photographs, then debate what Leica should do. I'm quite happy with what Leica has done already ... I have this lovely digital CL camera that makes splendid photos. Looks like it'll keep doing that for a long time to come. I like the CL so much that I just bought another Leica, an M10 Monochrom, that also makes splendid photos. These two cameras motivate and encourage me to buy another Leica.. at some point in the future. And yes, I've owned and used happily quite a few other Leicas in the past. Great company, great cameras, excellent lenses ... ya know?  G 2
