Heading back home to England in a couple of weeks for a week or so, just general photography and family visiting, might take a small tripod. I'm trying to decide what I should bring, and I know a lot will tell me - personal preference only you can decide, but here is what I have, and here is what I'm leaning towards, if anyone has any advice, it would be appreciated, not planning to take anything beyond 50mm, unless its the zoom...

Leica M10-R, EVF, Q2, Sony A7rVI, Ricoh GRIII. Leica 28, 35, 50, CV 15, 35 2.5, Sony 24, 35 1.8, 55 1.8, 16-35, 24-105

I'm thinking...

M10-R CV15, Leica 28, 50, CV35 (its tiny), EVF

or

M10-R CV15, Q2, 50, CV35, EVF

or

Q2, Sony A7rVI, CV 15, 24-105, 55 1.8

We don't travel internationally that often, what works for other people for general photography with maybe a bit of landscape stuff thrown in.

Cheers

Jonathan

I would say (suggest):

Option #1

  • M10-R + 35
  • Ricoh GRIII
  • Sony + 24-105

You can bring the Ricoh w/ you for dinner (cause it doesn't bother anyone, even the wifes, lol). The M for serious photography. The Sony w/ the zoom for excursions, nature or whatever you may need thanks to the zoom)

Option #2

  • M10-R + 28+35+50 ... Like a king! One charger and many shooting possibilities

I recently returned from cycling and backpacking for 5 weeks in Sri Lanka.  I took only my M10-R, 28mm summicron asph safari edition and 75mm apo-summicron and a Gitzo 1550T carbon tripod.  I don't subscribe to the view that you need to take 'back up' cameras on a trip to England, I prefer to eliminate clutter!

Of the couple of thousand landscape, street, wildlife and seascape images I returned with, the 28mm was used around 80% of the time, the rest were with the 75mm.  I didn't need anything wider or longer throughout the tour.

Keep it simple, travel light and work with what you decide to take.

If it were me, I'd bring the M10-R & EVF with a 35 & 50, maybe a wide angle, and the Q2.  My travel setup is to carry a 21-35-75 for M10-R and EVF, and a Q2.  Also some filters.  It all fits nicely in a medium sized backpack that also holds a travel tripod.

For me, the decision of what camera equipment to bring on a trip is dictated by two factors. 1) how light do I want to travel and 2) what kind of photography will I be doing.

Over the years, I have more desire to travel light and my Q2 with a small shoulder bag meets my needs in the vast majority of cases. The only exceptions are those rare trips where I need a long lens for example when we went to Tanzania and the animals were by and large far away. In these cases, I'll bring the full (heavy) camera bag with my Nikon DSLR, multiple lenses and filters.
