Does SL2-S still have faster and much better auto focus then SL2?

Any thoughts on which would be a better tool for taking photos at youth soccer games?

Was thinking of trading my SL2 for SL2-S and wasnt sure what pro and cons would be especially after the firmware update.

thank you in advance.

Ok : Youth soccer game ....

So are going to be paid for this?

Or is it a practice thing?

I shot youth soccer games with analog cameras.

And yes I missed some shots.

So if you are trying to check which camera is best for this autofocus and sports than maybe you need to check them both

on the same set or maybe some other brand too.

We shot at a venue with different systems: Leica, Canon mirrorless and Nikon too.

I was total fine with my pictures. But the canon performs (R6,R5) on another level.

But what is your goal of such a shooting?

I can tell you that the handling of the 24 mpx frames is quite pleasant. (sl2s)

And since the last firmware update there should not be any difference between the both cameras.

My thoughts on the Leica autofocus is: You need to practice.

And yes, I would love to have phase detect on the sl2´s.

What would I do if I am going to get paid?

I would go to a rental and check different systems.

And then I would use the system that performs best.

Hope that helps.

I guess that practice is more important than the camera.

kind regards Peter

I've had both.  No AF difference that I've noticed.  Only possible help would the higher megapixels of the SL2 for cropping and for using aps-c mode.  The SL2 also has one more FPS in medium mode if I recall correctly.  Expect some missed shots of action with either one.  A phase detect sports camera would be better, but I think you'll be just fine with the SL2/S.

Is this Sigma 150-600mm still the longest lens for the L mount?

Any rumors of Leica making a longer then 90-280mm lens, or anything better out there?

I have the 90-280 and find myself wanting more reach on the Sl2.  (besides crop mode)

Yes that's still the longest.  I believe you could use a TC with it, but I imagine the IQ would be bad, especially anything other than bright daylight.

Sigma makes two dedicated converters for the 150-600:

TC-1411 - 1.4x, makes it into a 210-840 F:7.0-8.8

TC-2011 - 2x, makes it a 300-1200 f:10-12.6

You can view the MTF charts with and without the converters on Sigma's product page here: https://www.sigma-global.com/en/lenses/s021_150_600_5_63/

They are dedicated converters, so they shouldn't affect image quality as much as a generic converter would, but contrast will still be lower than the same lens without a converter.

There might be some slight advantage to the SL2-S due to the faster readout speed - 24mp is faster to read than 48 - but in real life it's non existent.

I had both cameras, for the human brain it's virtaully impossible to say which is faster. Keep your SL2.

...I did shoot some your soccer games back in 2019 with the "old&slow" SL601 and the VE90-280...and I found the AF good enough to get good results. Sure, Leica's AF is not the fastest, but if you know your gear and how to use it you can get decent results.

I agree. Even for fast moving targets (in my case, with the SL2)
