Chris W Posted March 13, 2022 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a project coming up photographing people indoors in Europe using my FP (stills not video). I read somewhere, maybe here, that setting my shutter to 100 would eliminate any chance of banding in the images. Any advice on shooting with electronic shutter in artificial light in Europe? jaapv Posted March 13, 2022 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2022 I'm not sure about that one, given that AC cycles at 50 Hz.
Chris W Posted March 13, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted March 13, 2022 It's a multiple of the flicker rate of some artificial light, which in Europe is 50hz.
Alan Friedman Posted March 13, 2022 Share #4 Posted March 13, 2022 I find 1/60 best followed by 1/125. Definitely do some test shots on location.
nicci78 Posted March 23, 2022 Share #5 Posted March 23, 2022 (edited) Don’t underestimate LED flickering. They have their own weird frequency. It is really bad no matter your shutter speed. It is not a simple question of power AC 50Hz of 60Hz like TVs. It also depends of your sensor readout speed. The larger the sensor, the slower it is. The more MP it has, he slower it will be. Except awesome BSI stacked sensors. I found that in France, in most museums it is absolutely not possible to use electronic shutter no matter what. (Except Sony A1 ou Nikon Z9 ? Maybe ) Edited March 23, 2022 by nicci78

Chris W Posted May 25, 2022 Author Share #7 Posted May 25, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I photographed the band over three shows. My FP picture quality was glorious but severe banding made the pictures unusable (show 1). The Leica CL saved the day.

Chris W Posted May 28, 2022 Author Share #9 Posted May 28, 2022 (edited) I left the camera on auto exposure because at the soundcheck (with LED lights) I had no banding. It obviously depended what combination of lights the lighting designer had on during the music and the strength he had programmed. A few shots from the show were fine, but most weren't. The shutter speed was all over the place (due to the auto exposure). Two OK images, one from soundcheck, one from show. Welcome, dear visitor! Stuart Richardson Posted May 28, 2022 Share #11 Posted May 28, 2022 Wow…that is quite an influence! Seems we are still a ways away from leaving mechanical shutters behind…
Chris W Posted May 29, 2022 Author Share #12 Posted May 29, 2022 Yeah, it was pretty disappointing as the FP images appealed to my eye more than the CL in this circumstance. I was photographing three shows and had to use my CL exclusively for the second and third shows.
