andybarton Posted September 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have just paid Leica UK over £100 to service my 54 Summaron. It came back on Friday, and I took it for a trip across a Lakeland fell yesterday. Today, the girl in the processing shop said "I'm afraid your shots are a bit blurry" (Technical term, that, "blurry".) Seems to me that the Leica technician has forgotten to connect the focus ring to anything at all. Maybe he should spend more time fixing lenses, and less time selling binoculars at birding fairs. It's not as if it's hard to test the focus of a lens these days - why, I believe that Leica even have a digital body to which these things can be fixed. So, another trip to MK required. I wonder if they will refund my postage and £9 processing cost...? It's just been throwing good money after bad with this one. I wonder if I can fix it myself? Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Summaron service - I'm not a happy bunny at all.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted September 9, 2007 Author Share #2 Posted September 9, 2007 I have just done a check with some grease-proof paper, and the lens doesn't focus at any distance. So, it's not even as if it's been left stuck at its closest focus distance. I wonder if all the glass has been put back in...
kenf Posted September 9, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 9, 2007 "Sir, you wanted us to *replace* the lens elements, too? That'll be an additional 50, please!"
peter_n Posted September 9, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 9, 2007 It's nicely blurry though... Leica service here in the US seems to be completely overwhelmed with the M8 fiasco. I sent an M7 to get the VF replaced under warranty and they forgot about it. After several emails and a telephone call they found the cam, replaced the part and in all honesty, did a very good job (so far at least). I have a (second) 75/2 that is also under warranty but I'm not sending it in to Leica - can't afford the wait. I'll send it to a good independant tech and pay instead. andybarton Posted September 9, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted September 9, 2007 "Sir, you wanted us to *replace* the lens elements, too? That'll be an additional 50, please!" Well, if they didn't replace them, I'd expect the left-overs to be in the box It's a bit like working on an old car engine and having two bolts left over, I expect. Philippe D. Posted September 9, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 9, 2007 Hi Andy, "I'm afraid your shots are a bit blurry"What are you complaining about ? You've got a very nice lens to made artistic pictures yet. More seriously, You have my deepest sympathy, it's a shame for a Leica technician to deliver his work like that. bill Posted September 9, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 9, 2007 They haven't exactly picked the right person to p*ss off, have they...? This reminds me of the church clock that has stopped, vs. the one that is five minutes fast. At least the former tells the right time twice a day. Great bokeh, btw... andybarton Posted September 9, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted September 9, 2007 They haven't exactly picked the right person to p*ss off, have they...? Makes no odds. I'm just an ordinary punter. I have no special hot-line to anyone.
bill Posted September 9, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 9, 2007 Makes no odds. I'm just an ordinary punter. I have no special hot-line to anyone. No, I know, but you would think that they have someone there who is at least peripherally aware of our little sand-box here, and made the connection with the name. You don't let down your core customer base, especially when you know they have a platform to express their disappointment... Regards, Bill
stunsworth Posted September 9, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 9, 2007 Given the emphasise that many people seem to put on bokeh over sharpness these days I reckon they've slipped you the special limited edition 'neat bokeh' version by mistake. topoxforddoc Posted September 9, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 9, 2007 Steve, It's one of their new limited edition 'Monet' specials. Some people spend a lot of time in photoshop trying to get good pics to look just like that. Have you rung Wendy yet at Leica in MK. I bet you she'd be mortified Charlie
jacksparrow Posted September 9, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 9, 2007 I have to agree, that shot is kind of nice, beautiful colors... is that a flare also what I see in the lower right part? Does anybody remember a photo book recently published (I think) all with out of focus pics?
jacksparrow Posted September 9, 2007 Share #14 Posted September 9, 2007 maybe a little bit of "sharpen" in photoshop (sorry, I had to say it!)
andybarton Posted September 9, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted September 9, 2007 I will speak with my contact there tomorrow (the one that knew my R8 would be coming in last year when that had a problem first raised here...), I don't ask for, nor do I expect any special treatment. andybarton Posted September 9, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted September 9, 2007 Does anybody remember a photo book recently published (I think) all with out of focus pics? I have 26 more like this... It's a shame, because the colours look much better than before then lens went away.
bill Posted September 9, 2007 Share #17 Posted September 9, 2007 Andy, better get them to deal with that speck of dust in the lower left corner too... Regards, Bill
kenf Posted September 9, 2007 Share #18 Posted September 9, 2007 Actually, it looks a little like camera shake. Try a tripod first?
