Yes I know there are cases with the included grip but I'm not interested in these.

Do you think there's any way that (assuming I make the screw hole in the wright place) the Leica grip would fit over the average Leica protective half case on a film m?

No I don't think so. The clearance between the handle of the grip and the body would be too tight to squeeze a case in between, and I don't think you'd have enough thread left to screw the grip onto the camera after going through the bottom of the half case. But I don't have a half case to try it with, I only use a grip to centre the camera on a tripod.

No, it's either a half case or a grip. Even the cases with the thinnest leather are sill much too thick to accommodate both. If you would like to try just a grip and not spend a lot of money, the Cameradactyl Buttergrip works well and are fairly inexpensive. They are 3D printed so there are variances but had to beat for the price:

The link indicates the grip for the Canon 7 series but it will take you to the Leica M for all M film bodies except the M5.

Hi Jodad ,  I have this hand grip

https://www.ebay.com/itm/324861365684?hash=item4ba33f0db4:g:lNQAAOSw3lNhgNcp

more cheaper for my three M analog cameras ,  replacing Leica ref 14405 a discontinued product .

I think it comes from the same factory but more expensive , if it is marked Leica on it

As said Steve (250 swb) IMHO you cannot put over a half case

Best  Henry

I expected this answer to be honest. It’s a pity, I don’t want to pay for a new half case with a grip and currently I can get a pristine leica grip for about 40usd.

I really want to keep the halfcase I own on. I got it included free in a too good to turn down deal on a few other small leica bits (a few years ago). I’ve used it for the last couple years. For the first time

last week I dropped my MP on a Concrete paving stone and it hit hard. My heart sank :( - strap malfunction.   I have no idea how since the strap isnt damaged and I put it right back on… seems the split ring slipped out of the attachment on the strap. weird…

I picked up the camera instantly and although the case was scuffed, the camera was totally fine. It’s an original black leather case woth the removable cover that goes on top and covers the lens. Heavy and hard leather (and some hard internal card or something). Instantly I decided to never use it without this halfcase.

I think after a strap had done that once, it would be the last time I used that strap! The standard 14312 strap has a clever, secure attachment ring with a protective locking widget. One rather overexcited review:

I thought you hold the camera better with the grip than with a half case , on the other hand when you put the camera in your hand bag you can scratch the lens  and the camera (my case) with the "metal part" of the shoulder strap when you store them in the bag  . In street photos the grip is practical  because you hold well in hand and you shoot when the opportunity arises .

Sorry for the fall of your device

Best

Keep the case and get a stock 14312 nylon stap from Leica. The connectors are less likely to fail and they also have protective plastic covers that not only lock the connectors in place but also protect the body from scratches.

You're stuck with an either/or. Either use a strap and half case, or hand grip. I like the ML Grip by Photoequip.net. You already ruled out a half case with a built in handgrip - but for you that really seems the best solution.

Get rid of that strap ASAP!  Those connectors are terrible, I have had them fail on other cameras, but luckily they did not hit the ground.

If you want a quick detach strap, buy a Peak Design strap.

Worth looking through the list for a laugh!

Someone wants a grip that change’s color with the temperature! I had a couple in basic black for my Nikkormats and they work well but the 3D printing varies between batches. I had one that fit great but wouldn’t hold a 1/4-20 adapter in the tripod socket,  the other had just enough play between the grip and the body it would squeak until I made a buffer out of duct tape. They’re hard to beat for the price and you have to consider they make them for cameras no one ever made a grip for. After this thread, I took the ML grip off of the M4 and went back to a half case. A little protection couldn’t hurt.
