Been sorting my stuff for wildlife photography.I am leaving next month for Africa. October -suicide month- is too hot to walk with my 400, so it will be M8, Visoflex and 250. I wish for a Digilux 4 with M8 quality sensor, a 80-200 R lens ........... Bless the cropped sensor. I fear the R10 will not be for me.

Jaap, if you don't want to waste much money on an additional system, I would suggest the 40D with a 70-300/4-5.6 IS for wildlife ... the 70-300 IS is one of Canon's current best non-L lenses, this combo can be had for less than 1800 US in the States. And you'll never had any problem offloading Canon's equipment on eBay if you don't like it or just don't need it anymore after you come back.

If there'll ever be a Digilux 4, I wish they could go back to the Digilux 2 style and make it a fixed lens model with a decent 28-90 ASPH. ... only my two cents.

Thanks, Simon;I agree that combo is not bad, but I sold most of my Canon stuff, including the 100-400L. I did not like the results after many years of shooting the R7 with the 280/4.0 APO and 1.4 APO extender.

I agree John, quite good, but after decades of Leica, and experimenting with Canon, Nikon and even Mamiya, I vowed to stick with Leica. For now I'll go back in time with the Visoflex and I'll wait digital developments out. I'm sure those 4/3 sensors will get up in the highest quality bracket in time.

And your wish is mine - for the Digilux5 :)

surely buying a camera 'because its easy to sell' is a tad presumptuous

what about the Olympus E-510 and 50-200mm (400mm EFL $850)

you would prolly miss out on E3 release Oct 17 and the coming 70-300mm (cheap at about $400)

What 400 do you speak of? The 6.8/400 Telyt-V is a rather light-weight lens, perhaps 600g heavier than the 4.8/280.

I've been looking at that one; nice camera; but I am doubful is it is a good idea to mix the photographs with ones taken on the M8. I think it would be hard to post-process for a similar look. I think I'll just take the Visoflex, forget about the Novoflex 400 and wait for the Photokina....

6.8/400 Telyt-V weighs 1835g, the 4.8/280 (later, M mount, with improved optical peformance) weighs 1200g. That according the literature. I haven't actually weighed mine :D

This being Leica: not as simple as that. :p

The original 280 weighs 900 grams on my scales. The newer version has the same optical configuration and is a bit more contrasty, especially in the corners. The main weight difference comes from the changed mount, the new version mounts direcly onto the Visoflex, the older version needs ring 16466.

The 400 exists in eight morphs.

The original 400/5.6 shows strong field curvature. This was solved in two ways. The cheaper Leica versions reduced the aperture to 6.8. This lens was built in two versions: Leica sliding mount as you mention at 1835 grams and Novoflex follow-focus mount at about 2100 grams.

A more sophisticated design was the addition of a third lens t the single element. These lenses were made by Leica and supplied to Novoflex and assembled by Agfa. They were more expensive than the Leica ones but of higher quality. Noflexar and Noflexar-T.

Three versions, of which I have the last Noflexar-C 400/5.6(1997). It comes close to the 280/4.0 apo. That one, in Pigriff C, weighs 2585 grams, the older versions 2435 grams.

The two other versions were Leica R lenses, 6.8 with or without Novoflex grip.

It may be Novoflex supplied R versions as well. I could not find literature on that.

I am not clear on the different Novoflex Noflexar Pigriff models. I believe the Pigriff B is a single pistol grip whereas the Pigriff C and D are double grips (sub-machine gun type)?. How does one tell the difference between the model D and C? The one I have has no markings that I can see to show the model number?

Pigriff B may have a second grip as well. Pigriff C has a built-in adjustable extension tube while Pigriff B can be fitted with either a solid camera mount adapter or an accessory bellows that performs the function of an extension tube.

Japp, where did you learn about the origins of the various 400mm f/5.6 and f/6.8 lenses? I have not heard that Leica made the Novoflex optics anywhere else.
