Triangular LED on the left not showing on OVF

Hello

When shooting fully manual, I noticed that the triangular LED in the optical viewfinder on the left (i.e. when underexposed) does not show at all, not matter the exposure metering mode (spot, multi field or center weighted). Same issue when I set manually both the aperture and the speed but ISO is in auto.

On LV mode on the back screen or with the Visoflex 2, the EV scale shows properly on both sides when under/over exposed.

I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or whether it is just my camera.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks @harmen ☺️ Much appreciated you took the time to check and post a picture; you definitely deserve to eat that cake 😁.

I emailed Leica. 🤞

Enjoy your day!

You might refer to Page 24 of the M11 pdf manual which explains the OVF display in detail.

You might also try it in Aperture Priority Mode to see if your results change.

Thanks @roverover for replying ☺️

Aperture priority shows the shutter speed not the LED lights (triangles and dot) but I had the same concern as yours and I did check it. The shutter speed indication worked fine in Aperture priority.

The problem is that one LED light (on the left) doesn’t show at all whenever it should. I think it worked fine before the latest firmware but I am not 100% sure.

you are not really in manual mode when in auto ISO. it is a combination of aperture priority and time priority.

try all manual and make sure you don't have exposure compensation on and pick the default profile. When I swing from light to dark the symbol change from > O < just fine

Hi @Photoworks. Thanks for your help.

The issue is when I am in full manual (on ISO, Speed and Aperture) and also when in Auto ISO (manual on Aperture and Speed). These are the only 2 settings which use and show the triangular LED lights.

I didn't have any exposure compensation either.

What is troubling is that I get the triangular LED light on the right, but not on the left. The camera works just fine in term of metering and exposing. When in fully manual and in LV mode or with the Visoflex 2, it shows properly the under exposure on the EV scale (red or white marks on the left). So the metering works and the camera meters as it has been designed to. It's a display issue when looking via the OVF.

I did reset all camera settings and back to default profile, but to no avail.

If I am the only one with that issue, it should eliminate firmware bug, which is a good news.

Thanks for checking yours. 🙂

sounds like an issue, I would bring it up with Leica support in Germany

Your not going to effectively see the left triangle in this mode as auto iso is battling with the other settings. They only way to know for sure if its working correctly is in full manual control...ie defined ISO, shutter speed and Aputure only.

The manual says:

d. – for manual exposure setting:

Concurrently as light balance for exposure compensation.

The triangular LEDs give the direction of rotation of

the aperture setting ring and shutter speed setting dial

to adjust the exposure.

– Warning before the measuring range is undercut

As reported, the LED lights appear only on 2 modes in the OVF, and I have tested both.

- fully manual on all settings (aperture, shutter speed and iso)

- manual on aperture/shutter speed and auto ISO.

On these 2 modes, I have the circle/dot appearing and the right triangular LED appearing. It is only the left triangular LED which does not appear in any setting.

i am not sure I follow the point on auto ISO with manual aperture and manual shutter speed. All the more as I get the right triangular LED.

I am in discussion with Leica. I fear it is mechanical; either the left LED light being faulty or some electronic components being faulty which prevents it from being lit.

I appreciate the thoughts and input. It is a mystery as why and how it happened. Specially for a camera brand new and 1 month old.

I will let you know what Leica says…

I am not sure I follow what to make based on this extract from the manual or how it applies to my case but thanks for posting and trying to help. Hopefully Leica will clarify soon what is going on with my camera. I was concerned initially it could have been a firmware bug hence I posted on the forum to see if other people had same issue.

The triangles will also appear in Auto ISO mode if the Auto ISO upper or lower boundary is exceeded, i.e., the image is under or overexposed as determined by the metering.

If you have auto ISO enabled, and you adjust your f-stop one stop closed down..your auto ISO will then compensate and push it right back...therefore within the range of your defined auto ISO settings the red triangle is of little value when set to auto iso unless you move beyond the limits of your auto iso setting. If your light never lights up at all even in full manual...then it would indicate a defect. Id suggest you only look at the full manual settings to determine if its working or not.

No mystery...it happens. brand new, 1 moth old or 10 years old, it doesn't matter. It sucks when you just purchased the camera, but im sure your dealer will take care of you.

Just keep the lens cap on and turn on the camera - if the left triangle isn't flashing then there's something wrong...

Hi @NigelG. Thanks for your tip 😀

I was curious about it. I tried, and when I turned on the camera with the cap on and in full manual mode (aperture, shutter speed and iso), there was no triangular LED lights (nor dot) showing up. It showed the ISO setting, ie the exact manual number I set it to, say 64. I even tried to turn on the camera with the cap on and manual setting for the aperture and shutter speed but ISO in auto. Then the OVF showed "auto".

I tried manual aperture, auto shutter speed (ie aperture priority) and manual ISO: turning on the camera with the cap on still showed the ISO setting. It seems that whenever I turn on the camera with the cap on it shows the ISO setting.

Do you have triangular LED lights showing up when turning on the camera with the cap on? Or do you have the same as me, i.e. ISO setting showing up?

Thanks !
