LocalHero1953 Posted February 7, 2022 Share #1 Posted February 7, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) The take-up spool on my just acquired 1932 II Model D will not grip the film at all, and I can't see an easy way to retension the sprung leaf. Are the spools from all the cameras up to M2/M3 interchangeable? Or must I find one from that era to match? To run a first test roll through the camera I have taped the leader to the spool, but will have to take care when rewinding.
Advertisement Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 Hi LocalHero1953, Take a look here Leica take-up spools interchangeable? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted February 7, 2022 Share #2 Posted February 7, 2022 All take-up spool from the Barnack Leica may be used on Barnack Leica. Compatible to If, IIf, IIIf. Exception is IIIg, Ig which need "M" type so these are not compatible with former Leica.

Is it supposed to grip the leader, like the other two? It slides out too easily from mine. Or have I missed a trick in attaching it? a.noctilux Posted February 7, 2022 Share #4 Posted February 7, 2022 (edited) Check if there are some debris of older films inside the spring, far to the attaching side. Or the spring is old and doesn't hold the film ? No trick, just insert the leader as far as it goes. Edited February 7, 2022 by a.noctilux
Pyrogallol Posted February 7, 2022 Share #5 Posted February 7, 2022 You could try putting a bit of sticky tape or masking tape on the end of the film to tightened it up a bit? But maybe not then rewind the film all the way back into the cassette so the thicker end does not jam at the pressure plate. Or maybe fold over the end of the film to double the thickness and again not try to rewind the bent end past the shutter/pressure plate. Or just continue to attach the film to the takeup spool with tape and remove the rewound film with both spools? Or find another spool?

Good thought. I have loaded a film (using tape) but will run it through the camera as a test tomorrow, and will check this thereafter. 1 hour ago, Pyrogallol said: Or maybe fold over the end of the film to double the thickness I should have thought of this! I'll maybe try it. If it gets too tricky I'll just look for another spool - there seem to be plenty on ebay.
LocalHero1953 Posted February 10, 2022 Author Share #7 Posted February 10, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) The dealer has agreed to replace the spool. I guess dealers in s/h Leicas tend to accumulate such things.
a.noctilux Posted February 10, 2022 Share #8 Posted February 10, 2022 🙂 Paul you are lucky to have such good dealer. I hope it will work, as many times, I swapped ( thinking they are interchangeable between two Barnacks of different period ) take-up spools to learn that they are not so "swappable", I don't know why. So now I keep the right spool with the right and unique Leica.

LocalHero1953 Posted February 15, 2022 Author Share #10 Posted February 15, 2022 The dealer sent a replacement spool, identical, but it grips the film properly.
wlaidlaw Posted February 16, 2022 Share #11 Posted February 16, 2022 I prefer Leitax spools in my Barnacks. They have a spring up bayonet arrangement for the knurled sleeve, which makes removing the spool much easier for my weak fingers. They are obviously popular as these spools go for a fair amount of money. I was lucky enough to pick up a CLA'd Leitax K with two spare spools for less than some folk ask for just one spool.
