Lexar Professional 64GB XCII 2000X 300MB/s

My Lexar Card's lock has stopped locking (just flops back and forth) so now just the action of putting it in the camera locks the card. Anyone else experience this with other brands?

I had this issue in the past but cant recall which brande, but believe it was Sandisk, because Ive only bought Lexar and Sandisk cards. The Lexar is about a year old.

Any tips on fixing it?

I had the same issue with these Lexar cards 2 years ago, email them and you should be able to get FOC replacements and I’ve had no problems since. I think they did have an issue with this and will replace them no questions asked. Quick turnaround and happy with them now.

This only works well for if you have a hard drive failure on your main computer, where you might not have had time to backup your images to another hard drive.

So for example, you're out shooting with a 128gb card and you transfer all of your photos to your computer. Then you format your card and take new shots.   A couple of days later you realise that the files on your computer are corrupted somehow, so you've lost those images.

If you carry extra cards and use a new one rather than formatting your old one, you can always go back to your original card and get those images back (assuming they weren't corrupted on the SD card itself). If you want to protect against card failure you need to be duplicating your shots on two cards within the camera. With the M11, you have to use the internal drive as your backup, so you're limited to 64GB.

If that's the type of backup you need, I would buy 3 or 4 extra 64GB cards, use those as your backups, and not wipe them until you've had a chance to review your imported images and made backups to other hard drives when you get home.

deleted. sorry I mis read.

Whats missing in this discussion  ...is how much you shoot .  I have  well over 100K photographs taken while street shooting over 10 years with digital Ms .  At my peak I could get close to 20K per year but with the Virus and various ailments that come with age .....I have slowed to maybe 10K per year .   This is pathetic and each year I work on how am I going to increase my shooting back to over 20K ..maybe in 2022?

This is all street shooting and I try to travel to NYC,Miami,Paris, Venice and London each year ... Even did Cuba 6 times .  I have a lot of experience in traveling with digital Ms ,street shooting and trying various back up strategies .

So on say a 7 day trip ..how much will you shoot .  If I can get 1500 captures ...I am super happy .   I was once at closer to 2000 a week .

You can almost store that many captures on one 128GB card and a 256 would have more than enough .

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thorsten is correct that you should always use SDFormatter .  I clean all my cards before a trip with SDFormatter and label them for the  camera being used .  Reformat in the camera before the trip and verify the card is good .

Changing cards between cameras with out clearing old files is almost a sure thing to cause problems .  Dedicating cards is good advice .

So if I have two M bodies each with a 128GB card and 256GB of back up available .. How am I going to ever run out .   (Side notes ..I had a ton of trouble in Cuba when I brought way to many cards thru the airport ).

What has not been mentioned is NOT DELETING DOWNLOADED FILES .   If you download a days shooting as part of your routine and just put the card back into the body .. It will add the next days shooting without erasing day one .   Yes it does mess up your downloads a bit ..but LR at least lets you import without duplicating originals .  Ther maybe better alternative is to just copy the files to a 2nd card for off line storage .  This is how I did it before cheap SSD drives were available .

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Frankly I can not see using a M body for any real continuous shooting .    The technique for continuous shooting requires that you start the sequence BEFORE the moment and run the sequence thru it .  Nick Turpin is doing something like this.  Personally that really screws up my timing and rhythm .  But if you do that of course your back up requirements would be greater .

The only cards I have ever had a problem with are Lexar and say 5 years ago they were poorly made .  A few just fell apart on a trip .  Never had a problem wit Sandisk or Sony .   I favor Sony because they are more durable  ..they are as they are labeled TOUGH .   I don t think you need the fastest Q cards in an M and I believe David Farkas when he says you don need more than the much much cheaper Lexar cards .   I have used the Q,M and Lexar and have not seen any issues .  I would know if they were slowing my ability to capture a moment but I never use continuous .

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another must do ..is keep your  batteries charged .  I never let a battery run down .  Nothing corrupts a card faster than an "INCOMPLETE WRITE " to the card .  Normally my legs remind me to change a battery .  When I take a break I change the battery and look at my images .   Its when I get lazy that I might pay with a corrupt card ... Thats not the card its you not changing the battery .

These Kingston 128GB UHS II were recommended on LUF and work very well on my M10R/M10M (providing good value) and I would expect them to work on the M11 as well.  I will buy a few extra when I eventually receive my M11.  I concur in NOT buying cards of any sort on Amazon.  I've always bought on B&H and trust them not to be fooled into providing counterfeit cards.

Years ago I bought Sandisk card at the B & H store in the city and it not only became corrupt, it literally came apart. I wouldn't trust them any more than Amazon.

I am hoping this selection work:

Sony Tough 64GB M 277MB/s read and 150MB/s write

Angelbird 300MB/s 64GB

Sony G 64GB R:300MB/s W:299MB/s

Samsung 64GB Evo+/256GB Evo+

I am sure all will be fine with the M11. They have worked fine so far with Fuji and Sony cameras.

Some good info, and basic testing with various cards and their relative read/write speeds: https://alikgriffin.com/best-memory-cards-leica-m11/

Looks like the v90 cards do not offer a significant boost for read/write speeds, as the M11 may have an older mechanism to communicate with the cards.  I personally have a few 256GB Lexar v90 cards, and they do not offer any discernable increase in speeds to reach the deplete the buffer, than a v60 card.

Card which they are recommending for use with the M11:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1499810-REG/prograde_digital_pgsd256gbckbh_256gb_uhs_ii_v90_sdxc.html

Does anyone have any experience in using this memory card with any digital Leica camera?  If so, does "it work and play well" with Leica's electronics?

I use this exact card with all my cameras (M11, Q2, A1). A couple of years in, no issues so far.

256 Gb is a bit of an overkill, even with 60 Mpx. I always carry a couple of spares just in case anything goes haywire.

In my experience, All SD cards with the locking switch eventually fail if they see a normal amount of usage. It's happened to all of my Sandisk Extreme Pro cards too.
I usually place a VERY TEENY drop of superglue on the switch sliding area of the card and push the switch to the Unlocked position and let it dry. That works for me for very long periods of time.

What I do is on my Mac when using LR, after importing:

  1. I drag the 101LEICA file with content to the waste bin (=delete the file)
  2. open the 101LEICA file while in the bin.
  3. select all pictures
  4. select 'discard immediately' (do not 'delete' at this moment, then the OS will put it back on the card.)
  5. then: "put back" the file, The now empty file is wrtten to the SD card again.

Note, if you delete the files as only step, they are not yet removed from the card yet

When I use Capture One that does all this on a picture basis automatically.

I've tried several of the permutations.... my best workflow experience is using my 300MB/s XD card, putting it into my SD slot in my Studio, then downloading and simultaneously deleting.  I feel like I should use the internal storage as backup, but that adds workflow complexity.  Since photography is my hobby (vs a commercial wedding shoot that requires backup at all costs) I think I'll go back to SD card/ then internal memory when full.  But I don't see me ever filling up my 256GB XD card.  I imagine removing the card after every shoot adds wear to the card reader, but I'm not sure I've read where the card reader wears out over time (?).   Please advise if this is an issue.

Wow, how did you get away with that? When someone posted that link to me and i referred to the conclusions about ‘older mechanisms’ I was accused of spreading false information and called a ‘Leica basher’ 😂

I’m using the Lexar 1800x which was recommended here. I had a couple of file errors on latest firmware. More on the previous firmware.
The Sandisk extreme Pro uhs-1 I was using initially as it was all I had at the time was much less stable - like the camera felt super sticky and locking up and errors (haven’t tried on latest firmware)

I am new to digital M, bought a M11 some five weeks ago. I was advised to use a OWC 256GB Atlas Pro SDXC UHS-II V60 card and an OWC card reader. No problem with the card reader but today my M11 mentions the card is invalid and I should use a proper UHS-II card, which of course this one is. The card reader has no problem with the card and on my laptop I can see the images and copy or delete them.

My second card functions well in the camera.

Is this a problem of the camera, or is the SD card already corrupted or whatever in these 5 weeks?

Any advice is welcome.

Lex
