bayerische Posted September 7, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, I recieved my ordered Leica Goodies today. I got the Hooked and Sling. The Sling seems to be just as good as described. Good way to secure the M in your hand, I'm not taking this off! The hook, seems to be made to a high quality, first I thought it's going to be just another hook, but made in the matching color to the M black body, but I'm impressed with the build. It will hold up. I do have one concern, have someone else used the Hooked? Will the small strut on the M8 be able to carry the whole weight and increased weight of the M8 body + lens due to movement of the camera when, ie walking? Or should one use both the fastening struts on the body?

jaapv Posted September 7, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 7, 2007 Leica M eyelets have looked fragile and have been incredibly strong since the M3 and even the screwmounts before that. I don't recall any instance of breakage. Some have worked loose in the past, but even then they will not instantly come off. There is no reason to suppose the M8 is different in this respect. bayerische Posted September 7, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted September 7, 2007 Here's how they are fixed from the inside: OK, so they are fixed with a screw from the inside? Right? I could imagine a small washer could have made them even stronger.
wlaidlaw Posted September 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 7, 2007 Mark, I used Hooks for years with Contax G2 and Digiluxes 1 and 2 with no problems - never came undone unintentionally. I found the material of the sling a bit hard and uncomfortable so remade it with a thicker softer material (a Praktica neck strap found new in a bargain bucket) that had the advantage of a velvet lining for the top finger. I could not use it on the M8 with the grip, as my fingers will no longer bend to reach the shutter release so Tim Ashley now has mine. Wilson
marknorton Posted September 7, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 7, 2007 No, they are fixed by both screws. Quite safe, IMHO.
bayerische Posted September 7, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted September 7, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) No, they are fixed by both screws. Quite safe, IMHO. OK, so there is somekind of plate still inside over what you see outside the camera? Cause I can't imagine two screw holding the small .5centimeter ring coming outside the body where you hook your strap.
marknorton Posted September 7, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 7, 2007 TBH, I didn't peel the vinyl back to have a look, but both screws are used to secure the eyelet and I expect the screws are fastened with Loctite or similar. It's a major job even to tighten the screws after the camera has been built.
Guest tummydoc Posted September 7, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 7, 2007 That is true, in fact the change from a single crimped stud to 2 screws took place near the end of production of the non-TTL M6 aka Classic. Previously the eyelets had a propensity to rotate and become loosened if torqued. Another fallacy is that using both eyelets is necessarily safer than one. If one eyelet or strap fixing fails whilst using a traditional neck-strap, the only thing between the camera and a collision with the ground are the quick reflexes of the owner. Nitnaros Posted September 7, 2007 Share #10 Posted September 7, 2007 Can you use the Sling on a M8 with Leica Grip? I like the Grip a lot - much better handling. But I want a comfortable strap around my hand to secure it and not having to hold it actively all the time... Bye, Peter
stephengilbert Posted September 7, 2007 Share #11 Posted September 7, 2007 Can you use the Sling on a M8 with Leica Grip? I use the Hook and Sling with the grip, attached opposite the grip handle. Usually I thread the Sling back through itself a few times, and use it as a comfortable hand grip.
Nitnaros Posted September 7, 2007 Share #12 Posted September 7, 2007 I use the Hook and Sling with the grip, attached opposite the grip handle. Usually I thread the Sling back through itself a few times, and use it as a comfortable hand grip. I see; But you could use the Sling on the same side as the Leica Grip, if you wanted - ? I think I would want to keep the holding side to the right of the camera, that's why I am asking. Peter
dcoombs Posted September 7, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 7, 2007 Peter, I use the grip with a wrist strap from Luigi (Leicatime), which he made to measure at no extra charge. With that combination I can hang the camera from the wrist with my figures around the grip. It's very comfortable and you can walk around all day with it. wstotler Posted September 7, 2007 Share #14 Posted September 7, 2007 Here's how they are fixed from the inside: Mark--love it when you respond to a thread with a simple comment and a photo from your teardown. It's an amazing, almost "last-word" tactic that's informative, to boot! Thanks. -Will
wlaidlaw Posted September 7, 2007 Share #15 Posted September 7, 2007 If you want to use a sling on the RHS with a grip, you need relatively flexible fingers. If you can manage it, I think it is excellent - sadly I can't. I am wondering if the Luigi wrist strap might be the answer for me. However I think you would need to take your neck strap off which would be a bit of a pain. gesper Posted September 7, 2007 Share #18 Posted September 7, 2007 I use the Sling on the right with the grip but only hook one finger through it. Two is pretty much impossible, although if it was looser it might work.
Philinflash Posted September 7, 2007 Share #19 Posted September 7, 2007 I use the Sling on the right with the grip but only hook one finger through it. Two is pretty much impossible, although if it was looser it might work. I like the Sling a little bit loose so that I can easily slip my fingers in and out when needed. Once my fingers are all the way into the Sling loops, the camera is very securely an extension of my hand regardless of the slight looseness. I love the Sling; it is always on the camera and does not seriously get in the way even if I am not actively using. Philip Kozloff
bayerische Posted September 7, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted September 7, 2007 Have now used the Sling for a day, and I'm standing by my initial statement, it's not coming off! It's a perfect little helper in keeping a safe grip on your M. I'm not associated in any way with Leica Goodies! I'm just amazed.
