Nice shot Jakontil. I see lots of images on here where either the person in the portrait has their eyes centre frame (and therefore a suboptimal portrait with 45% white space above the head), or deep depth of focus, or back/front focus. I'd like conceptually an M11 but not if it's impossible to get a good number of keepers with portraiture type depth of focus, with focus and recompose, including narrow DoF environmental portraits and subject off centre with a 28mm. What's your technique here? Any hints/tips? I'm suspecting I'm going to have to wait for an M'X' Evf and use DLSR/EVF cameras in the meantime. I remember getting a fine matte screen for my canon 1v manual focus to achieve the same as centre spot focus and recompose was a real limitation otherwise.

Thanks mate,

since this wasnt snapshot, i would have composed the model ready to shoot even before i see through the ovf, shooting with noctilux 0.95 widest open might be challenging, as there’s few way to nail with lots of limitations

Usually when i shot portrait like this, pre composed the talent with minimum focusing distance which is 1m in mind, i used magnifier 1.25, this definitely helps me in many situations

knowing your distance is at minimum, i dont use focus barrel anymore, instead, i move back and forth

Thanks for the reply, the answer is traditional photography skills! And they certainly paid off! What's your strike rate for the focus and do you tend to focus bracket or just chimp between shots?

When i was doing back and forth, the hit rate is quite high, and i dont usually chimp, my battery last 55% after 1550 shots more or less

hit rate degrades slightly though when im in another distance say 2-3m away but talents usually moving, my hands have to get used to synchronizing her movement, not that i know this lens very well, but this is the only lens i use for shooting models in portrait intentions

and that doesnt give guarantee i focus better with a lux or a summicron 😀

Waterton Lake, Alberta. This area was devastated by a forest fire in 2017 but nature is recovering. M11, 28 Elmarit - the lightest lens I have for the stiff climb to the viewpoint!
