rivi1969 Posted November 3, 2021 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good afternoon, As you might know, most wide-angle M-mount lenses perform not so great specially in the corners when paired to full-frame mirrorless bodies like Sony or Nikon. Just wondering if you have experience using Lumix S bodies and if the problem still exists. I would love an SL2S but for the meantime I could do with an S5... Thank you. darylgo Posted November 4, 2021 Share #4 Posted November 4, 2021 The sensor glass thickness and angle of incidence are frequently referenced as creating smeary corners. If the sensor glass is thin then less issues will occur, and likely some lenses will be better performers than others. The S5 is a similar sensor to the S1 and should behave the same. The reports I’ve read say the issue of smeary corners is not correctable in the S5. I don’t have any real world experience here and I find that testing and evaluating one’s own equipment is best. crony Posted November 4, 2021 Share #5 Posted November 4, 2021 Hi, many years ago, I adapted my Leica M mount lenses (from 12mm to 135) to SONYs (NEX-3, NEX-5n, NEX-6, A7, A7R2), with mixed results ... Sensor stack thickness being one factor (SONY - 2mm, NIKON Z7 - 1,1mm, PANA S1R -1,45), PANASONICs should perform better than SONYs, and NIKONs even better. But this is a simple calculation, not being able to take the different properties of the glass used by the manufacturers into account. I was thinking about re-entering this game again with a NIKON Z5, which has an 24MP sensor. - On the other hand, I could adapt my M mount lenses to the SONY A7R2 in APS-C mode, cutting off the difficult sides, and still have 24MP like the Z5. As always, there are trade-offs ... ---
Alberti Posted November 4, 2021 Share #6 Posted November 4, 2021 (edited) I find that the S5 is very good, surprisingly good with wide M-lenses. here a picture, where the only change is applying a profile (summarob 28mm) in Lightroom Welcome, dear visitor! The important thing is, this was not in Italy . . . no impressed Italian flag. Jaapv has posted examples with his ultra-wides that came out great too. I am not that far yet . My 35mm lenses perform very good on the S5. Edited November 4, 2021 by Alberti
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! crony Posted November 6, 2021 Share #8 Posted November 6, 2021 Hi, a lens-test of M mount lenses on Leica M and SONY : http://www.ronscheffler.com/techtalk/?page_id=310 I can confirm Scheffler's findings for those of the lenses tested I own and use myself. So, if the filter stack thickness is the crucial factor for M mount lens performance on mirrorless, the LUMIX S5 should show at least the same or even better performance. There is always the "danger" (or pleasure) when buying a body of another system, that in the long run native lenses will be bought, (which can be financially challenging with native Leica L mount lenses.) Over the years, I bought a set of native SONY/ZEISS lenses ... And so, I only adapt 12mm and 15mm M mount lenses, and only when necessary. But this is personal. Leica M is the centre of my hobby. I use other systems only if necessary ...
