I asked the tech guys at Leica NJ the same thing about using a non-Leica branded flash unit on my M-P 240.  They said it would not harm the camera, but I would not have TTL flash metering.

Upon asking further questions, they also said that both the camera and the flash have a voltage rating.  If the voltage rating of the flash unit does not exceed that of the camera, the flash should not be able to damage the camera, even if there is a current back flow from the flash unit to the camera.

A back flow should not happen if the flash unit is operating properly with no damage or defect.

To dig further for flash voltage, I have bookmarked this site:

https://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html

where we can see that old Vivitar 283

"Older units have been reported as high as 600V! "

...most (all ?) of Nikon flashes can do no harm to Leica MP in this voltage aspect.
