Mitchell35 Posted October 22, 2021 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here are the lenses. Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. Lens is the perfect lens all around. Small, sharp and given really great reviews. Leica Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 Lens. Tiny, over priced lens with really great reviews. Not really sure why the reviews are so good for it. It's slow and the reviewers seem to ignore the IQ. All of that said, I really want that Summaron 5.6. It's a street lens and the size is a huge sale for me. What do you think, am I making a huge mistake? I am a hobbyist and bought the 50mm summarit 2.5 for the small size and focus tab. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted October 22, 2021 Posted October 22, 2021 Hi Mitchell35, Take a look here Leica Summaron-M 28mm or Elmarit. 2.8 or 5.6. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Capuccino-Muffin Posted October 22, 2021 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2021 Summaron; masterpiece lens.
Drmat Posted October 22, 2021 Share #3 Posted October 22, 2021 i have owned both. the summaron has a look that is unique, but to be honest, unless you specifically want that look, buy the elmarit. The size difference is immaterial for actual street photography - they are both light and small. One disadvantage of the summaron is you can inadvertently get a finger or thumb in an image while focusing i'd you are not careful! The extra 2 stops on the elmarit are significant. most street photography seems to be at F8, but the light does go down... i find that i do a lot of street photography wide open, especially if i want to preserve a fast shutter without driving up the ISO (i prefer to shoot at 160 on the monochrom). Having said that, one appeal of the summaron is that vintage look and heavy vignetting, which might complement some grain in the photo. Just my thoughts. These are emotional decisions as much as they are practical ones. The summarit should do most of what you need, so if the 28 is a fun "luxury" lens as opposed to a workhorse, then the summaron might be a fun purchase.
KFo Posted October 22, 2021 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2021 (edited) Just get it then. I have 4 Leica 28mm lenses and the new Summaron is my favorite. It’s small and renders well. Is this the last lens you’ll ever buy? M10P, Summaron 28 Welcome, dear visitor! KFo Posted October 22, 2021 Share #10 Posted October 22, 2021 (edited) So, I guess my point is that if it’s the lens you have on the camera at the time, it works just fine. I choose the Summaron deliberately often. Edited October 22, 2021 by KFo
KFo Posted October 22, 2021 Share #11 Posted October 22, 2021 As far as getting your finger in the way: easily to solve! Put a step up ring on the lens to act as a guard keeping focus finger out of the way. Welcome, dear visitor! I tended to not have the hood on mine because i liked to be able to slip the camera in my pocket.
Alberti Posted October 22, 2021 Share #14 Posted October 22, 2021 (edited) The dog in the mountain shows the f5.6 has gracious separation. Why want a 2.8 for that? Edited October 22, 2021 by Alberti
Tessar. Posted October 22, 2021 Share #15 Posted October 22, 2021 I really regret selling mine during a period where I wanted the funds for a 35mm lens. It's fabulous and I'll be getting it again when funds allow. (Even though I also have the 28mm Elmarit ASPH II and 28mm Summicron ASPH I.) Gobert Posted October 22, 2021 Share #16 Posted October 22, 2021 I own both. Besides the similar 28mm they are incomparable. The Elmarit is razor sharp and ideal for modern architecture and landscape. The Summaron is the romantic lens. Ideal for street and old architecture. I use it almost always wide open.

Gobert Posted October 22, 2021 Share #20 Posted October 22, 2021 No link, but it is from Heliopan. I bought it may be 4 weeks ago. The online shop I bought it from says “not in stock”.
