Nokton f1.2/35mm Special Edition chrome

I got an email from FexEx and I should receive tomorrow my Nokton 1.2/35.

 

I found few weeks ago a 2003 review for this lens (Tom Abrahamsson). I sent him an email this morning to ask him what he thinks about this lens on a M8.

 

Here's the reply:

 

Manuel, the 35f1.2 and the M8 is a match made in heaven. Put the M8 at 1250 iso and the lens at 1.2 and the only limitation is the fact that it is dark enough for you to have difficulties seeing what to focus on! The camera will pick it up easily. I did some low light stuff with the M8 and it is truly magical, particularly in the mono chrome mode! I find the 35f1.2 far more useful than the Noctilux, particularly with the M8 as the 35 becomes a 50 and the Nocti becomes a "long" lens with the problem of holding it steady in those type of situations.

 

I will send the bayonet ring to John Milich in a few days for coding (I'd like to use it -and enjoy it- for a few days first). I just wanted to ask other Nokton 1.2/35 owners if coding is really important on this lens. Should I code it as a LUX 1.4/35 ASPH? I heard there's a screw in the coding area: Is this a problem to code the lens?

Got mine last week and loving it! Whilst I am a great fan of John Milich's work, I was going to try to "Sharpie-Code" this as a 35mm 'Lux. I've had great success with the Sharpie on all of my Bayonet Lenses and only need the Milich adapters for the screw mount CV's; I just draw across any screws in the way. This shot was taken in very dark shade against a bright contrast background at low ISO and f1.4:

The chrome 35/1.2 I ordered from CameraQuest is also out on the van for delivery tomorrow (USPS / Parcel Force in the UK) :D Interesting that the lens spent all of two minutes in customs and unlike Fedex in the past, I wasn't asked (yet!) to pay tax/duty before the lens was released.

 

So thanks Manuel for the heads up on that special edition of the lens. :)

Yes, it should be coded if you plan to use it with IR cut filters.

I asked for FedEx because I don't really trust my new postman (A Milich adapter for the WATE sent by USPS was lost) and some of my neighbourgs have reported similar problems. The Post Office is investigating. Grrrrrrr...

 

On the FedEx tracking service I haven't seen anything about taxes... I haven't even seen about customs. I hope I don't have to pay any taxes. Grrrrrrr...

 

Bob, did you get the vented hood as well? Will you try to hand code it?

 

TIP:

A friend of mine has used adesive black letters you buy at the shops (and you transfer with a pen writing on the plastic cover) to code some old lenses with great success. He says once you have transfer the "dashes" to the lens, they remain there. It says it more solid than the "Sharpie-code"

 

I asked Tom Abrahamsson to publish an update for this lens with the M8.

Beautiful composition, VERY nice bokeh, contrast and sharpness give a certain tenderness I like very much. Great shot!

I am not, at the moment, in a "lens-buying-mood" (wait for Summarits :) ...) but this thread has made me reconsidering a lens I thought sometimes when bought my M8... is there some post of pics taken at 1,2 with it ? Did anyone suffer backfocusing & co. ?

When I bought my M8 I didn't buy intentionally a 35mm lens and I got the CRON 2/50 because I knew I would like in the future a fast lens for special porposes. For a couple of months I hesitate between the Nocti and the LUX 1.4.

 

To be honest, when I found the Nokton "Limited Edition" chrome I though this lens had everything I was waiting for. The Nocti becomes a 67mm lens and I can tell you I use rarely the CRON 2/50 for this reason: two narrow. The LUX seemed to me more apropiate for the M8 as a low light lens, but the price was putting me off. Last thing, I have a chrome M8 and I wished to have a second chrome lens (the other one is the CRON 2/50). As I will use mainly the Nokton in low light situations, I don't care it's chrome (discretion, light reflection, etc.).

 

Finally, everybody agrees with the fact it has a VERY nice bokeh and flare is VERY well controlled (people say bokeh and flare are better than with the Nocti and the LUX). Contrast and sharpness seem to be the weakest points wide open, but at night I don't like high contrast and/or sharpness (personal taste)... and when I need that, Photophop will help me. After f2.8 contrast and sharpness increase dramatically. AND THE PRICE... 600 € (819 USD) it's a bargain when you compare it to Leica prices!!!

 

Now, I must try the lens, of course! :D

Today I have "hand coded" the Nokton. It works fine but it took me a h*ll of time because of one screw.

 

I haven't seen yet any difference in image quality after coding. I haven't test it a lot either. In any case it's a great lens. To use a very British expression "I'm tickled pink with it!" :D

 

My question is: Has someone get it coded from J. Milich? Does the screw make a problem for hard coding? I'd like to send the bayonet to John but I'm scared of having problems because of this.
