Thanks, Mike. That probably explains why my video user profiles didn't fully reload.

Odd: my previous profiles already stored whether it was in Photo or Video mode.

I will look at Highlight-weighed metering. Before, I found it too easily distracted by bright lights in the frame that I would rather stay blown.

  • LocalHero1953 changed the title to SL2-S firmware v2.1 - what changes do you see?

I haven’t done any real shooting yet but so far I’ve noticed the following:

  1. Geotagging with the FOTOs app seems to be improved. The camera seems to connect with iOS 15 a bit more quickly and gets location data more reliably. I guess time will tell when I actually use the camera for more extended periods.
  2. This wasn’t mentioned in the release notes but was mentioned in the Red Dot Forum post that the new camera FW includes lens firmware. This also includes new lens firmware for the 28 APO SL (FW v2.1) and 16-35 SL (FW v2.0). The 16-35 SL was left out in the last round of lens FW updates when Leica added linear MF focus options and now the new v2.0 lens FW supports linear focus.

On S1R, I frequently used - and I was quite hapy with - Highlight-weigthed metering. Good to have this in the SLx toolbox...

It seems they have been working a little bit on the AF again. My Summicron SL35MM now makes some other noises than before and it seems a little (I guess) faster. Or maybe it is the lens-FW. Does anyone know if they're working on the AF lowlight ability?

Upgraded to v2.1, I noticed the overheating on the left hand side and battery dropped from 75 to 50 very quickly when I use fotos remote shooting. Plastic burning smell around the hot area, never happened in v2. If you do not do video a lot with the follow focus need, can stay in v2 comfortably.

I just updated my SL2-S to V 2.1 and found out that all of my Apo SL Lenses 35/50/90 were updated to Lens Software V 2.1

The Highlighted weighted metering makes a very appreciable difference.

Sorry for the tilted and artless image but I saw the strong light reflecting off the car and thought the contrast between that and the relatively dark interior would make a good test.  These two images are unedited and exported from Lightroom on my iPad a few minutes after I shot them.

Here are two shots taken within seconds of each other.  The first with normal weighting and the second with highlight weighting.

Of course you can adjust both in Lightroom or something else.  In these edits I clicked on ‘Auto’ on both and moved highlights all the way down to minimum in the first one and shadows all the way to the max in the second.

In this particular case I do prefer the highlight weighted setting and I’m glad to have it.

Is it just me or the AF lock on a face has been slightly improved?

Today I went to a street festival (yes, they do still exist!) with the Summicron 50, set to iAF and face/body recognition. I noticed the focus was more "stable", the green square was still jumping from face to face occasionally, but less than with the previous firmware. In the end I left the feature on the whole time, usually I disable it and go for either spot or field.

I feel the same with video AFc and face detection. Still dog slow, but more usable accurate. For some reason, the frame around the person or in the face remains yellow but the footage is reliably in focus.

How did you find highlight-weighted metering affected the EVF?

It still somewhat affects the EVF, but more as a warning than as an exaggerated reaction. This way, it reminds you that the scene holds tons of dynamic range, and some compensation with the EV might be meaningful for best exposure. At ISO 800, I get with highlight-weighted metering pretty fat colours. Like it.

I think you can get it green (on my sl2 pre V3 - on beta test-) if you half press the shutter during the recording

I didn’t have a problem with it.  I does make the shadow areas a bit dark and with other photographs like landscape etc it may present a problem but I’ll have to try it out.
