antialiasing Posted September 6, 2021 Share #1 Posted September 6, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I was able to do manual focus override in AF mode on the SL2 (following tips from some other threads here): half press to focus and then turn focus ring to manually fine-tune the focus. The turning of the focus ring helpfully brings up the magnified view. But, after I'm satisfied with my manual fine-tune of the focus, how do I exit the magnified view? What I found so far was that the only way is to wait -- the magnified view times out and the viewfinder goes back to the normal view, after a few seconds of inactivity. Is there a more direct way? I'd appreciate any insights. Thanks, Harry SL2, 24-280 (2 lenses)

MarkinVan Posted September 6, 2021 Share #2 Posted September 6, 2021 Hold the shutter button down half way.
antialiasing Posted September 7, 2021 Author Share #3 Posted September 7, 2021 Thanks for the reply, but half pressing the shutter button and turning the focus ring are what gets you INTO the magnified view. Now, how to you come OUT OF it, without waiting for the timeout?
beewee Posted September 7, 2021 Share #4 Posted September 7, 2021 You can set the camera to MF and then back-button focus with the joystick and/or adjust with the focus ring. When you’re done, half-press the shutter to stop EVF magnification.

Paul2660 Posted September 7, 2021 Share #6 Posted September 7, 2021 This whole implementation for magnification by Leica is lacking. Most cameras you just double tap on the live view screen to magnify then you can switch to the EVF if you want. View stays magnified. Leica only allows a double tap for magnifying in playback mode. You should be able to use AF then double tap the screen to check it. Making sure you have the tap for AF turned off as an option for the LCD. Again like you Nikon or Canon and Fuji allow for. beewee Posted September 7, 2021 Share #7 Posted September 7, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) You can also set one of the custom button to activate/deactivate magnification.
antialiasing Posted September 7, 2021 Author Share #8 Posted September 7, 2021 Yes, MF seems to be the only way. Thanks for the suggestions. The sequence of actions in a complex situation where AF is desirable but on the other hand requires manual fine-tune/override AND lighting is such that AE-L is required, is as follows: choose MF mode; press joystick for back button focus, fine tune with manual focus ring (which kicks the system into magnified view); half-press shutter (and release) to get out of magnified view; move camera so that focus field indicator is on the metering target, half-press shutter (and hold) for AE-L; recompose and press the shutter all the way to take the picture. (Another thing: since the joystick can even be assigned to AF-C, in MF mode, you don't lose tracking in MF mode. However, the concept that you must be in MF mode to shoot a bird nest--where you may need to override focus to avoid branches in the front, but must also be ready for birds arriving/taking off--is quite quirky :-)
MarkinVan Posted September 8, 2021 Share #9 Posted September 8, 2021 Once you get used to back button focusing you will never go back. It's been so long I forgot that it mention the need to go to manual focus. I find it a very eloquent solution.
antialiasing Posted September 8, 2021 Author Share #10 Posted September 8, 2021 Agreed in general -- for a while, I had my D850 configured so that half-pressing the shutter triggers AE-L, and the AF-ON button on the back does AF-L. That is the same as the SL2 in MF mode. The only reason I change it back to default was that in some shooting postures (like when turning the body 90 degrees to shoot to the right) it is hard to put the thumb on the AF-ON button. This is especially true when a big lens is mounted such as the 120-300 f/2.8E. Now I have a similar issue with the 90-280 APO. But the Leica is nowhere near the weight of the 120-300 so it is more OK.
