That's what I got from his comment. My question to him was obviously informed by the experience of @Matlock(and at least one other member of this forum) who apparently has an unrepairable DS M3 - not what I would call 'internet nonsense' but a real experience of a DS M3 owner. Maybe those here with allegedly unrepairable DS M3s should send their cameras to DAG and see if he can dispel the nonsense.

Graham, you DO have some margins, these M are tempting, even if selling later can be an option. That's one thing we can be sure of I think Arnaud Really happy with this one thanks for the info along the way

sh0ebox Posted September 5, 2021 Share #44 Posted September 5, 2021 Congrats on the purchase! You made an excellent decision, and I’m jealous that you managed to find an M6J with your birth year for a reasonable price. I would sell a kidney if I found the M6J with my birth year and birth month…. I also own an M6J and absolutely adore it. My first M was an M3 and I absolutely love its aesthetics, build, and more importantly the high magnification viewfinder as a primarily 50mm shooter. I knew I wanted something similar but with a light meter. In my quest to find a metered M with high magnification viewfinder, I started with the 0.85x M6. I tried both the classic in black chrome and the TTL in silver chrome, but I just didn’t quite love them the same way as I did my M3. Their build quality, while still very good relative to other cameras, just didn’t have the same robustness of the M3. That and I just preferred the cleaner look and the M3’s beveled windows. I always knew the M6J would be the one for me… it was just a matter of finding one. Once I finally found a lightly used copy that I felt was fairly priced (it didn’t come with the lens or the presentation box, which was fine by me as I planned to use it and already have and love the Dual Range 50mm summicron), I decided to take the plunge. It very much exceeded my expectations and now lives happily alongside my M3 as its metered companion.

But you know it's funny, but the truth is I didn't realise it would be as good as it is. The birth-year tie-in was really a major factor in swaying my decision over another TTL. I had some concerns which have proved to be completely unfounded (I didn't know how I'd handle having the shutter speed go on the 'other' direction to my M10 and M6 TTL, for example), plus I had originally thought my next purchase was going to be a black paint camera (eg TTL Millennium) ..... so it's actually been a massive surprise how much I loved the J instantly, including the chrome. It feels really light and well-balanced & the winder and shutter are joys to use, overall super light and 'zippy' (it's the only word I can think of to describe it - I'm also faster with it, maybe due to the ergonomics and weight). I find this quite interesting as the innards are (we would assume) the same as an M6 ? So, would an M6 (classic) feel more this way than the TTL I own? ... Because for me so far the TTL and J are honestly like chalk and cheese . My TTL now feels like a Station Wagon (albeit a handsome one that's reassuring to drive) versus an 1960's era Aston Martin that is the M6-J, ....jump in, speed off and feel on top of the world Would be interested to hear your thoughts on whether the M6 (classic) would give a similar usability due to the size? Or whether the J is more like what the M3 feels like, perhaps ? If the M6 classic feels more like this then I may have bought the wrong (for me) M6 version when I bought the TTL ! Mine came with some signs of use and I am quite fine with that - I can see this thing collecting a few battle scars and I don't feel the need to baby it too much, I think it will quite suit it and re-sale condition is the farthest thing from my mind for this camera as will hopefully never necessary. Also agree about the finder mag... Have been having a ball shooting 50mm on it and think I can relate to the comments people make about a great camera 'getting out of the way' now .... the clutter less finder juts adds to that experience Edited September 5, 2021 by grahamc
a.noctilux Posted September 5, 2021 Share #47 Posted September 5, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Graham, Love is not something we can plan to 😉. Myself, I can not explain why I 'love' to take pictures with one M ( or one lens) over another. I tried to understand, but failed. We can make this feeling logical, but what for ? We can say that this has some millimeters less height or some grammes less ... Or the shutter release IS shorter (in non metered M for example) by a couple of 1/10 mm. And so on ...

At the risk of bursting a bubble, I assume maybe you were born in 1954? All of the M6J's have 1954 on the top plate, reflecting the year of its introduction. The month thing is a nice touch. lct Posted September 7, 2021 Share #52 Posted September 7, 2021 1954 is indeed the year of introduction of the M3. All MJ6 bodies have the same "40 Jahre LEICA M 1954-1994" engravings on the top plate, together with the serial number of the body from 1954-01 to 1994-40, based on 40 bodies per year. There is no month engraved there IIRC but i have not my body with me so i may be wrong.

Hey Tim, as mentioned by lct they have serial numbers engraved for each of the 40 years (40 units of each , so starting with 1954-01 to 1954-40, etc etc), in marketing hype 'celebration' of each year So while ultimately it's just 4 numbers and definitely not going to make me take better photos (!) I was quite happy to find one with my birth year, albiet followed by 2 random numbers that aren't of significance to me They were of course all produced in 1994. 2 hours ago, lct said: 1954 is indeed the year of introduction of the M3.
