I got an open box M10-R regular black finish and while the price was okay it came with a loose shutter button and an extremely dirty sensor.  I was able to finger tighten the ring around the shutter button and it seems to be fine, but I don't know if there is something else that needs to be tightened internally.  I cleaned the sensor and while that wasn't a big deal I had asked the dealer to do it before he sent it to me.

There were a couple of other minor issues and my emails to them have gone unanswered.  The first red flag was when they got my address wrong, even though I confirmed it with them.  It was kind of a fiasco to get FedEx to finally deliver it to me.  This is a Leica dealer in Southern California that doesn't seem to pride themselves on customer service.  Disappointing when you've just spent almost $8000.  It does have the original warranty if it should need anything else, but hopefully not.

We’ll f*** me - it’s just happened to me (M10-R). The real annoyance is that I’m just leaving London for a couple of weeks and needed the M… I’ve got Q2 and SL2 so will survive, but it’s an annoyance and the first time with an M for me (and I go back to M6)…

I bought it second hand from Red Dot about 4 months ago.  It's still in warranty (registered with Leica) and Leica Wetzlar and London are being really helpful (providing a loan body) as I've got a planned assignment coming up and want to use the M alongside Q and SL2.  Up until recently I always had  two M bodies (I liked to work with 28 and 50 in tandem - and was happy to have the backup).  And guess what - I never had an M (from M6 to M10) fail on me!  Just my luck this time - but kudos to Leica service!

This is why I buy and sell everything (and I am admittedly a bit of a GAS sufferer 🙄 ) though Ivor/Elaine/Kimberley/Ash/Alex/ "Uncle Tom Cobley and all" at Red Dot...

Just started happening to me this last month (3/2022), I have a silver one I got shortly after they were released. I assumed something must have gotten into the mechanism, but now I see it's not just me. Guess it goes in for service. Serial 5512xx range. Hate mailing this thing out :(

I’ll never again. Mine was brand new, sealed in box from the Leica dealer. My first Leica (M10-P) was bought second hand. Bad sensor.

I know they’ll be 100 posts saying “I always buy second hand and never had problems”, but I will never buy anything second hand again. That was the first and my last.

Does the serial matter? Is this an early batch issue or what? How long did you have it before it started?

FWIW, mine is

Made: Sept. 9, 2021

Purchased: Oct. 12, 2021

Shutter: Buttery Smooth

I am going to take a wild guess and declare that a lot of these shutter failures can be tracked back to people using these stupid soft shutter release buttons. If you’re using it, stop. They’re not needed.

Mine was made in Nov. and I've yet to have a problem with it.  Someone recently gifted me one of those nice red leica soft releases and still no problems with the shutter release...  My "wild guess" is that when removing a soft release or cable release is that the button gets unscrewed a bit without the user noticing and that causes a problem.  But like I said, it's just a guess because mine still works.  YMMV but I'll keep using that "stupid" soft release because it was a gift and it seems to help when releasing the shutter and maintaining stability of the camera.  To each his or her own.

I used them when I shot Fuji, but the shutter button is so nice on the Leica it’s like the steering feel between a Porche and a Toyota Corolla. Putting those soft shutter releases on it would numb the feel for me.

Did you buy your used M10-P from a reputable Leica dealer, with warranty and return policy?

They are a Leica dealer. I got rid of it and bought a new one from another store. The only new ones were M10Rs. Didn’t lose any money. I just put what I already spent towards a new one.

Doesn’t matter now. Water under the bridge. I’ll never buy anything used again. Be it in warranty from a reputable dealer or whatever. I don’t like buying used things and the first thing I buy used has a problem. Never again.

Hope you never buy a new Leica product that has a problem requiring exchange. You’ll have to switch brands.

Mine was new, Nov '20, from dealer. I've never put anything in the shutter release at all. It seems to happen when the camera is having its first cold start of the day, then go away once it warms up.

Jeff

Has never happened to any product I’ve bought new.

My camera is the last body I’ll ever buy. Lenses, the ones I have now are perfect so I’m not so sure I’ll be getting any lenses either. I think I’m pretty set.

money spent on plane tickets will get me better photos than money spent on gear. 1 camera and 2 lenses is all I need.
