minimalist looks for images that fit the lens(es) he or she has, the opportunist swaps lenses to fit the image they are seeing
..........nahhh can't cop that, I spend a lot of time with one lens but I never go out to look for images that fit the lens, I just use the one lens ,,,,,,,,,,, swapping lenses is like moving one's feet

WATE, 28/35/50, 90, and 35 1.4 for low light. I carry only tthree lenses at a time on the street, replacing the Tri's and 90 with the 35 low light in the evening. A small tripod for indoor during the day if needed.

If I did not have the 28-50 I would replace it with the 28 f2 or f2.8.

Makes me think I should sell off the other stuff I have, probably never will.

Uh, no it isn't. ...................... Moving ones feet alters perspective, always has, always will; it is a basic fact of composition and one you of all people should already know... So since you use one lens AND move your feet to compose with it, you are in fact finding images that fit your lens.

Cheers,

wait a sec...... u have all those lenses and u have no clue which to use ?????

if u dont manage with 35 or 50 alone (or on m8 it sould be 28 or 355 alone) then simple take point and shoot camera...... if u know how to manage one lens alone then u should know which additional ones will be useful for u .....

I just waded through the five pages of this thread, and have to say, Vic, you are absolutely right: the quality of photogarphs is inversely proportinal to the number of lenses one carries.

The fact is that the original poster asked about what to take on vacation travel! And Guy is talking what he uses for commercial work, which is an entirely different kettle of fish. But I wonder whether even commercial work needs that many lenses; but if you have any assistant to carry your bag, why not? Except for the "inverse proportion formula"...

The idea of these tourists with their huge and heavy camera bags is simply absurd. I've seen all these postings by people on the photo.net Leica Forum detailing the all the lenses that they took with them and then posting the most banal pciture postcards.

I've just gone through most of your website, Vic: what fantastoc and impressive picture. If you have an enemy he should give you Guy's camera bag twith all its lenses, to ruin your photogarphy.

What 6 or 7 lenses is too much, how weak are we. ROTFLMAO

You know i do not buy that theory at all on . "the quality of photogarphs is inversely proportinal to the number of lenses one carries". That is absolute bull shit in my mind. You guys have fun with the one lens theory i will just collect my checks from clients and live a nice happy life with my glass and bad back. I like choices to make images is the bottom line . Further discussion on this is really stupid , think what you will.

Exactly . For travel i think a lot of folks take a lot of gear and than pair down for different events. I do the same, travel is different than most stuff and we did slide off topic. Let's get back to that Film Vs digital debate , i laugh at those. LOL

No way! Vic's posts are very funny and he's perceptive and a very good photographer. Have you seen his website?

I think we have forgotten that we are all created different, see differently, have different ways of taking pictures, and even more important, we take different photographs!

Whatever we need to bring out the best in us, in our vision, we should use... one lens, ten lenses, or "10000000000000000000000" lenses... if that is what it takes, so be it.

We should judge the final work, not the tools used to do it.

that's according to you Jackie babe, No I don't find or look for images that fit the lens, I guess that is your approach. Feet sure the perspective changes with lenses( good to see you thinking again) but some of us do not see it as an important issue,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,remember your's is a gear head perspective not all of uas approach things in that narrow way

:D :D People that rely on a bag of lenses are lousy at taking pictures

And that's according to you stnami boy.... If you move your feet to get the image, you are adjusting a physical 3-D reality to fit your lens' 2-D view of it, simply no way around that. You can call it whatever you want, but it doesn't change what you are actually doing...

As for me being a gearhead, wrong again... To me, gear is a tool and nothing more. And I simply prefer to have more tools available to work with than you do. Nothing wrong with that, especially if you only need one tool to do your work. However, I have seen that philosophy backfire time and time again... To the guy who only owns a hammer, everything looks like a nail --- and as approches (or personal thinking) go, they don't get any narrower than that.
